Photos look good and the exposure looks ok to me on all pics.

Nice action in #'s 1, 3 & 5.

Horizons are a bit off in #'s 1&2.

I really like #6. I'm not sure how you captured that shot, but I think I like it because it is different.

Thank you!
I seem to forget to adjust the vertical on my photos, I will make sure I keep an eye on that.

Photo 6 was with my 10-20 Sigma EX wide angle.

No flash was used.

The light was ok in the gym, I am still getting a b800's strobes soon. but until then I will be shooting like this.

I recently had my customers approach me and ask me if I use flash in my BB photos. I answered no. They said they were at an away game and a women was using flash throughout the game and it was soooooo distracting. These were 2 middle aged women. So for those that argue it is not noticable, I offer this story. Don't be is such a hurry to get b800's.

They look a shade or two underexposed to me.

The Mark II can produce nice files at ISO 3200 when given enough light to "expose to the right." In your situation, I probably would have dialed in ISO 3200 and settled at 1/400.

To the above comments. Thank you very much!
My 1D2 is still new to me, I came from a 20D! I used ISO 1600 because I was unsure of the quality it could produce at ISO 3200. So I was being safe while learning as I went.

I will differently use ISO 3200 during my next event and post those up here for more input!

As far as the b800's im getting those mostly for portraits and that type of photog. I do see lots of others use them for sports and get good results. Then again lots of photographers use ambient light as well and produce good results.

I am sure I will use them during a b-ball game sometime, however I may just save them for the big events, like if they make it to Finals.

Great Thanks!
I was a little worried if it would have turned out or not. I think I will play with it more during the game, maybe get some wide action.

handled, i dont know anyone who would try to use a tripod during a basketball game, just think of all the shots you would miss!

I shoot in one gym near where the AD sits and this year alone I have heard middle aged women complain to him that 1) The cheerleaders needed something longer under their skirts than the tights they were wearing 2) That the visiting fans were being unsportmanlike by yelling during free throws 3) That the volleyball outfits were inappropriate 4) That they should not be sellng soft drinks at the games because the sugar was bad for the kids. I offer this story to point out that fans (Not just middle aged women) bitch about everything.

What I have NOT heard in the past four years is a single coach, player or official make any comment about properly set up strobes.

What I have heard repeatedly from coaches, players and parents is how much better strobed photos look than photos taken without them.

If you really want to set yourself apart from everyone else, get your AB's as soon as you can, set them up properly and take the best images you can. The players and parents will thank you for it. They still probably won't buy squat, but they will enjoy looking at the better images, they will think you are a photographic genius and they will remember you when it comes time for portraits and other photography needs that actually do pay money.

Thank you!
The current photographer there honestly does nothing and has little to know ambition to take better photos. He comes in and puts a chair under the hoop and takes his photos from there, never moves!

I came in with my camera for the first time and people told me he has the best spot, I had to LOL!! Just wait until I get my lights!

Big K.....I will not argue that strobed photos look better to you and me and everyone else that knows anything about photography.

Last year I had the entire JV Boys team ask who the clown was setting off flash every ten seconds. It was someone from the yearbook who believe it or not did know what he was doing. I have the capability to strobe basketball but people around here think my images are pretty good already. I notice strobes wherever I go. I am not saying it is wrong to strobe, I am just not comfortable using them when I believe it is distracting.

That's the winning attitude.

I did not mention before but thought I should now, be sure that you check with the coach and the AD to be sure they are OK with you using strobes. I get by with a lot in my area but know that some places are not as supportive.

You guys must have some high end yearbook photographers in your area. The hacks that do it around here were covering a game the other night with a pop up flash. I just shook my head.

As I mentioned in my last post, different places view things differently. The kids around here just eat it up when I show up with the lights and remote cameras, etc. They feel like they are in the big time. A few of them ask more questions than on here about what everything does and how it all works. They are all really into it. I guess I am lucky.

If a coach or AD ever said to not use them I would not use them. I don't strobe every game so am perfectly comfortable shooting ambient and do like the benefit of motor driven shooting. By having f/1.8 and f/2 lenses it is very manageable. However, my sales are 5x or greater for strobed work vs non-strobed so whenever possible it is a no brainer. Magazines and most newspapers (at least the one's that pay anything) just pass on non-strobed work unless you are lucky enough to be someplace where you can shoot at ISO 1000 and even that is a stretch. It has to be something really cool to get them to be interested.

While I respect your consideration and concern for being distracting, I personally do not care about complaints from fans. I am there to do a job so try to do it to the best of my ability. If the powers that be are OK with it that is good enough for me and if anyone ever does complain, I will smile and politely direct them to the AD and let him deal with them.

Fortunately for me, the fans here are more concerned about sugar and "slutty" cheerleaders and volleyball players.
