i think its a great picture to document your son and his new guitar, although i dont find the composition to work .and in the b&w photo i like the color of the guitar but the hilights are blown out against the snow. just what i think though, im pretty new to photography as well but learning.god bless

I think you should have taken the angle more from the right of him. The house in the background isnt flattering but say him leaning against the stone would have looked great. He still would have looked fine in a jacket so he wasnt freezing his butt off in the snow. It looks kind of unnatural with him standing in the snow like that.

First thing that comes to my mind is "why is a person playing guitar in the snow?"

More contrast and blacks in the B&W/selective color also.

Hey Green Man,
Just noticed some interesting pics in various places from relative newbies and decided to add some thoughts:

First off, ALWAYS look behind the subject before you take a picture.
If there's something going "through" their head, or pointing at a funny angle, or if something is fluorescent or brightly coloured in some other way, it will distract a lot from the final image.

That's one reason why so many people invest heavily in expensive prime lenses with wide max. apertures, as it greatly helps to soften/blur out completely the background.

Next, I have to agree that my first thought was, "Why is someone playing guitar in the snow?" Which means that your scene is already confusing the viewer.

Third, cool guitar!!!

Fourth, ALWAYS LOOK BEHIND THE SUBJECT!!!
(Yeah, I know I already said that, but it's worth repeating!)

Crop a bit tighter. My eyes seem more curious about the driveway, stone thingys and the snow.
