I thought I would pick up a Circular Polarizer for my new Sigma 24-70 EX DG 2.8. WRONG!!! it needs a 82mm. The 82mm Hoya Multicoated Filters run from $241-329. Thats over half of what I paid for the lens.
Just had to vent sorry.

Get some of those big old 70s sunglasses and tape them to the front ;)

If your using it on a 1.6 camera try a cheap stepdown ring to the largest size polarizer that you already have and see if it shows up in your photos. You may get lucky and not need a new filter.

I'm cheap and I'm using the Sunpack 82mm CPL filter. It's only around $60. So far it has worked pretty well.

should'a got the canon, its 77mm filter size is the same as the 100-400 and 70-200 lenses...makes life simple !

shiato,
LOL yeah well even if I were to buy the absolute best 82mm polarizer I would still come out cheaper than the canon. I wish. HEHE
I may go with the cheepo Polarizer. Unfortunately I dont have a one remotely big enough to try the step down.

I just think its ridiculous at the prices these lenses sell for it just a little piece of glass. They cost as much or half of lens call me a crazy cheap basterd but I won't pay that much for one. I know some say you gotta pay if you want to play but that is just crazy.

I'm currently using a 72mm linear polarizing filter on the same lens.
The 20D focuses fine and no vignetting.
I bought the 72mm linear polarizer in the late '70s. Still works fine.
The 82 - 72 step down ring cost more than the filter.

With regards to the pricees of these things-
CPL's are abit difficult to make and the cheapies can really show this when used on tele lenses (they can creat strong blur).
You might get away with it quite well on a 70mm zoom -though one would feel odd using something cheap on such a lens! :)
By the way-have a look around at the name brands(canon ,sigma etc) someone may just by chance have a good one in that size cheaper than hoya
