Is the MPE-65 the most popular macro lens for most of you (to get LordV, Dalantech, etc... superior type images)?

With a good lens like this will I still encounter the same focusing and DOF issues as I am now with my other lenses + ext tubes (100 2.8, 50 1.8)? Or will it be even more difficult because this lens does 1x-5x?

Thanks for your input!

Thinking that this will be the next lens to save for (for doing just macros).

The MPE-65 is a great lens for getting higher magnifications but the difficulty of use just goes up with the magnification not the lens type. I'd get used to shooting at 1:1 to 2:1 first before even thinking about it.

There is a poll around, I think the canon 100mm f2.8 macro usm (classic the poll predates the new IS version) is the most popular.

Even if you get the mp-e you will still need an ordinary macro lens as the mp-e can not focus less than life size, a conventional macro is needed to cover infinity focus to life size.

robertnzana,
I personally like my EF 100mm f/2.8 more then my MP-E 65mm f/2.8 (its more multi-usable) unless I want to do a higher magnification, then the MP-E 65mm is the ruler... But its not a better lens then my 100mm f/2.8 to my eyes, and its not easier either.

I really like my MPE-65 but I tend to use my EF 180mm macro most of the time. Both are very difficult to use, but the MPE for me, is much more difficult. Even with the MT-24 flash its still challenging.

The first lens I ever picked up after the kit lens was the MPE, it was a rough start, practiced on Computer bits and pencil tips, and once I picked up the MT-24 flash I caught on pretty quickly.

Used the 100 for macro and the DOF was so narrow. I couldn't imagin the MPE! That DOF must be microscopic!
