Questions on New Lens

Just got my new Sigma 17-35 f/2.8-4 and have a couple of questions. On the lens hood, the are marks for Out and In with a little arrow for each. What do these refer to?

Second, how do i line up for the hyperfocal distance for full clarity fr? If I have it set at 17mm and lets say the mark should be 1.5 feet and I have the aperture set to 22, where would I align the 1.5 ft mark from the focus ring. Would it be aligned with one of the F22 marks, the left one or right one? Or is it center aligned?

I might assume the marks on the hood are for aligning it - to twist it on and off. Setting the distance - the mark in the middle. Left and right 22's are trying to show you dof when you focus on the middle mark.

Yes you are right, my high school photography just came back to me. Trying to learn some of this over again.
