This may seem like a silly question but do most people keep their lenses in the cases they came in when you carry them in your bag? The 70-200 L lens has a large bag and the 17-35 wide angle has a large case, the two of them together fill half the bag.

My only lens that came with a case is the 70-200 F2.8 IS, and I don't keep it in its case - I keep it in a padded bag/backpack. If I take it anywhere in my smaller bag I would put it in its case. I got cheap padded cases for some of my small lenses, I sometimes use them to stop them rattling around inside a big case. When i'm working, they're all ready to go in the bag.

Thanks for the feedback, I went with them solo tonight and it was much easier. Here is my new wide angle lens. Was tough light. Well let me know what you think. The sky on top is giving me trouble.

The house is actually a pumping station on the Scituate Reservoir, was built in the 20's.

I wouldn't even think of doing that as they are often way too large to fit in a case, as you say. The Sigma cases, for example, are bulky and very heavily padded. They do a great storage job, but not practical day to day for carrying around. I store mine in the plastic bag they are enclosed in from new and then in tightly fitted compartments in my backpack. This keeps them clean, secure and helps prevent rubbing or knocking marks.

If I'm using my Lowepro Phototrekker backpack then yes I do tend to pack my lenses in their cases, this way if I want to unload a bit of gear they're already protected and it doesn't add that much weight.

Thanks for all the excellent responses. I think I will be travelling much lighter from now on.
