I have a friend which got recently à Rebel XT and he has the following problem. If he shoots in Raw mode, then the pic files appear as JPG files when he connects the camera directly to the PC through USB. But if he uses a compact flash card reader then the files appear correctly as RAW files (CR2).
Does anyone noticed this problem ?

I dont think raw files will transfer from camera to PC directly. When you hook up the camera to the PC what you are seeing are the JPG thumbnails.
For raws you must use a card reader to transfer files.

Or the Canon software.

User error. Also "For raws you must use a card reader to transfer files" is wrong. Make sure you install the lastest version of the Canon software, if you insist on using it. I use DIM from alanlight.com with a card reader, no problems at all.

TIM is correct make sure you have the correct software installed /i believe digital professional will also allow you to edit the raw files and print.i love my digital rebel and have two cheap photo shoots already for friends.
