Ok, with the talk on the forum lately about the Sigma 10-20mm I have been looking....

I've been holding out for the Sigma but, I'm thinking maybe I sould get the Canon version instead, the question is; this is an $800 lens, and there is a temporary hood shortage anyhow. But it's said to be sharp and a very quick AF, plus I'm tempted by Ringtype USM. Plus I believe you go Canon for the glass....

I've realised I've never had a lens for wideangle, it's a whole realm of pictures I've yet to discover. Bottom line, those that plunkd the money down...is the Canon glass worth $800 large (it's large for me) for non-L or should I just wait out the Sigma 10-20mm DC for $470? Will I be happy using the Canon sans hood?

I've ruled out the Tokina 12-24mm, if I'm buying another lens I want the full 10mm for the 1.6x body that I have now to get the full 16mm FOV effect.

I've been able to talk myself out of upgrading my current kit to L's but not having a wide angle is starting to bother me. The other worry I have with the Sigma 10-20mm DC would be future use. I don't really care if my 18-125mm DC won't work on a future Canon DSLR, it was purchased to be a lens only for my Drebel and to be sold likely with the Drebel. But I'd hate for the 10-20mm to not work with a future DSLR too, which has me leaning toward the hoodless EF-S.....since it should have shelf life, I hope.

I love it. I am not shooting the average nature or landscape shots, but It gives me some really nice angles and flexbility.

This review is really tempting me now....

Anyone have a picture of this goofy thing on a camera? Drebel even?

I'd love the 10-22, but I suspect i'll wait for the Sigma 10-20, purely because of price. It comes with a hood too, which is helpful.

For anyone who may be looking for a hood for the 10-22, I ordered one from here about a week ago:
http://www.janosphotovideo.com/
Received an e-mail that the hood was back ordered.
I received an e-mail today letting me know the hood has been shipped.
Price was $29.
I bought the 10-22 from Dell a few months ago during a sale/coupon deal for $640 total. I was one of the lucky ones; had it in 2 days. I haven't really given it a good workout yet, but the few test shots I took with it were terrific.

My work colleague who is bring my 10-22 and 70-200 to Oz for me in ONE WEEK! chatted to me via MSN today to tlel me "Simon, I LOVE those lenses... I may need to buy them myself!!". I'd told her to test them out and have a play on her camera before she brought them over from the US. I can't wait!

Why looking of a hood ?? My 10-22 arrived complete with it. Are in the US selling differently ?

Canon US only ships L's and DO's with hoods.
Personally I think all IS Consumer or L and $500+ lenses should include the hoods, period.
And now we have a shortage of hoods for 10-22mm EF-S's, bah!
I'll say it again $800 F-ing dollars and I can't get a HOOD!

The reason only makes me look at Sigma for my small consumer purchases.

COOL, any vignetting with the threads on the front of the filter?

Tell ya what... you're right !!! Just 5 minutes ago I've found the box of my hood, that I purchased separately and forgot... sorry for the misleading. Bad memory, you know, with the age... :D

This lens is basically an "L" without a red stripe. Canon will not be designating EF-S lenses as L. It has the super UD glass in it and will out perform the 17-40L.

I love it. I almost sold it awhile back thinking I would get more use out of another lens...I'm so glad I didn't!

Lot's of good responce, OK, I'm sold.

I'm going to place my Canon Elan 7N & 28-105 f4-5.6 EF on ebay this weekend, I'm going to completely give up on film to help fund the purchase of the Canon 10-22mm EF-S.

In addition, what do you guys use for a 10-22mm lens case. I carry all of my Digital Rebel gear w/ 18-125mm & grip attached in a Tamrac day pack (3751?), and attached to the side of the daypack I have a Tamrac M.A.S. lens case for my 75-300 IS USM w/ hood. I have a place to hang one more lens case on the other side of the daypack (for the 10-22mm.)

The small Tamrac M.A.S. case isn't wide enough 3.25"Dia for the Canon 10-22mm 3.3" Dia (w/0 the hood.) Anyone have the Lowepro 1W case? It looks to be my next best choice for keeping all of my gear together on the daypack.

Just spent a week with the 10-22 (and my wife :)) in southern France and I have to say it turns out really great shots, here's a couple from many that I took over the week...

Part of Europe's largest sand dune just south of Arcachon
http://photobucket.com/albums/v116/hillion/France05.jpg

And even when my wife get's to use it the results are pretty good. Taken outside my name-sake village in Northern France
http://photobucket.com/albums/v116/hillion/France20.jpg

One thing to consider is that if you're going to use a polarizer make sure you get a thin one because with mine at least, at 10mm you get a shadow in the corners, this problem is resolved if zooming into approx 12mm.

Best wishes,

Paul

I had planned to get a thin UV filter for that reason. Not sure if the thin polarizer would be in the budget, unless I got a thin Tiffen or generic I think it would have to wait.

I have UV filters on all my lenses except the 10-22. I use a polarizer etc a lot on it and I got fed up of taking on and off the UV filter. If it looks like I'm going to be using it in sandy/dusty conditions without a polarizer then I can just use a UV from another lens. If you can only afford one I'd get a decent polarizer over a UV anyday when it comes to this lens, far more useful in my in my opinion.

The 10-22 is a great lens. No vignetting with a standard B+W MRC UV filter. A standard polarizer will vignette up to about 13mm, then it's OK. I usually don't use a polarizer on ultra-wide shots, so no big deal.

MrChad

So I can use a threaded normal UV filter no issues--good for the lens cap too, but a threaded polarizer has issues so use a thin polarizer, OK.

But that's still: C-Pol.fil. 3x $$ of a good UV filter.

I may as well stick a recommendation in here too... I'll be selling my 17-40 after getting the 10-22 and 17-85 recently. The 10-22 easily outperforms the 17-40 in my opinion, and I think it deserves a red stripe on it!

See the photo attached, and the (more interesting) 100% crop from the edge of the frame. This is 10mm, f/3.5, 1/500, ISO 100.

I really enjoy playing with my 10-22 on my 20D. Here is a before and after of a shot I took at the new Wynn resort here in LV. I Photoshopped the pic and used CS2's Filter, Lens Distortion correction to straighten up the verticals. I haven't quite figured out what to do about the pin cushion effect that created, but I having fun!

This shot encompasses a huge scene, and was taken at a focal length of 13mm.

I just posted in another thread. There dosent seem to be much difference between these two lenses, plys hood costs roughly around $30 ....

I am still confused, why people think there is big price difference in these two lenses...

I will have to order one from NY. I went to 3 local shops Saturday trying to purchase the lens. I sold my 10D and purchased a 20D because of the 10-22. i thought that it would be esay to get my hands on one . It is a little more difficult than I had anticapated. good things are worth waitng for. The Sigma is alright I guess but my experience with thrd party lenses are that they usually are just ok. Great camera great lens (canon 10-22) Great photos

I just posted another couple of pics with the 10-22 taken a few minutes ago here. Without it, no way you need an ultrawide for those, also due to the small space available.

You mean this review of the Canon 10-22mm (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/Canon-10-22mm-test.shtml)? But they're comparing it to the Sigma 12-24mm there, not the new Sigma 10-20mm.

I'd love to have the Canon 10-22mm, but since it's an EF-S lens it won't fit on my 10D. So I'd love to see how the Sigma 10-20mm performs, but AFAIK it's still not available in shops.

Wow, the test shots look nice. I was beginning to second guess wanting this lens.....but it appears it could be a wise purchase. I'm yet again being tempted by the wide angles. Well my Elan 7N is on ebay, hope it sells....if not I may still buy the lens any how.

There are several comments in this thread about using UV filters on this lens. I thought the general consensus among dSLR users was that using filters simply for lens protection was not necessary and degraded image quality. Is there something unique about this lens that changes this?

I love my 10-22 too, its one of my favorite lenses. I also sold my 17-40 for it, and it does deserve a red stripe. The image quality is amazing.

Im only using a cheap-o Ritz UV filter on it untill i get around to buying some better stuff. So far so good, the UV hasnt caused any problems with vignetting or anything like that.

I like the 10-22 alot. I have been shooting with the wide ones since a Pentax L1 with 15mm lens years ago. Used properly and with planning the 10-22 is a sweet lens.

Get the hood if only for side bump protection and put a quality filter on it (you are using quality glass so....)
