Hi all. I received the black Tripod collar A (B) from B&H today for my 70-200 F4L. This is probably not news to most of you but WOW what a difference it makes. It is much much better balanced and much easier to use on a ball head. It even seems to be okay on my little Maxi 343E travel tripod (ballhead version of: http://www.imaging-resource.com/ACCS/VEL/VEL.HTM). Don't laugh at my little tripod. I have a big Bogen tripod I bring when I know I need one. The little tripod goes everywhere and is much better than nothing in many cases. Anyway, the 70-200 with the ring mount balances so well it actually does pretty well on the little tripod as long as there isn't a strong wind. Here it is including the tamron 1.4x TC on the little tripod, taken with my S100 P&S. I can reposition the whole thing with three fingers it's so well balanced. Finally, as others have said, the ring makes it trivial to rotate from horizontal to vertical. Best $90 I've spent in awhile.

Well, it is only 1 day old so the jury is still out. I've taken some shots with and without and at least in the center the sharpness seems to be the same. There is a bit less contrast with the TC then without but nothing to complain about. The camera has no problems focusing outdoors. Of course it was dark when I got it so I was playing with it here in my office and it had terrible trouble focusing indoors with the 70-200 f4L and the TC, but that's to be expected. I also put the TC on my nifty-fifty and it worked nicely. This weekend I'll spend some quality time with the TC. I bought it to take pictures of a satellite launch in Japan in two weeks. I'll be 3 km away. It is, however, a big rocket.

I can't understand why the white version is $30 more...
Thanks for posting that pic. I'll be springing for the collar soon.

The tripod mount ring I linked to states it is only for the 200 F2.8L II lens. They say the expensive white one is the one for the 70-200L.
FScott, could you confirm that the black one here is the one you got? I can't find any other black one and I am sure someone on another forum had pointed to this one.

It works perfectly. The picture I show at the beginning of the thread is my 70-200 f4L with the consumer black ring. It is supposed to use this tripod ring that is labelled "tripod ring A (W)":
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=186247&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
it costs $119.50 at B&H
I learned on this site that the black "consumer" version which is supposed to go with the 200mm f2.8 works as well. It is labelled "tripod ring A (B)" and costs $89.95 at B&H. Here is the link again:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=211436&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
It is all metal construction with a felt liner and is very solid. I believe that they use white paint on the (W) version and black paint on the (B) version and there is no other difference besides the $30.
My black ring works perfectly on the 70-200 F4L.

Does the 70-200 f/2.8 IS L comes without a collar in the US ? Here the lens is sold with both the hood and the collar.

Only the 70-200 F4 does not come with a mounting ring.
