Hi WW
Its a cracking lens I use it as did not want the latest 24 version, I use the 1D mk 2 which is only a 1.3 crop factor so the lens works well on this.
most deffinately one of the sharpest lenses I have.

I just put up some info in the Sticky section above there are links to some photos there.
using the lens with a Life Size Converter.

You will not regret buying that lens, if you can find a clean second hand one, please keep in mind the fact that this lens has been one of the most used Professionally for years. on 35 mm the ideal wedding lens.

First of all ... There can be quality differences in every man-made item, so also in Canon's most expensive lens line. It's one of the facts of life.

Still, the 24-70 L is considered to be one of the best and sharpest lenses available.
I know that there have been a lot of 'I had to try out x copies of the 24-70L before finding a half decent one  ' posts recently.

However, bear in mind that one disgruntled user on the internet can make more noise than 10,000 very happy users, if he decides to ... and many of them obviously do

Another (maybe interesting, maybe boring) bit of trivia:
It has always been Ferrari's (the sports car manufacturer) policy that when they build a car that is rated at 500 HP, they normally sell it as '480 HP' car.
This is due to the fact that the 'true' output can be something like 495 - 510 HP, and they know that some people *will* put it on a test bench immediately after purchase and raise hell if it only has 498 HP instead of the 500 advertised

Lens sharpness is a bit more difficult to measure and also to advertise, alas

Check this link (http://luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/24-70-review.shtml) for a comparison between the 2 lenses ...

I would definitely NOT assume that your chances of getting an absolutely gorgeous version of the lens are better by buying a used 28-70 from eBay than by getting a new 24-70.

Granted ... you won't have to send the eBay lens back if it's not sharp ... because you can't :p

So ... if you want to save money on a great lens ... go ahead with the eBay deal.
If your aim is to get the highest possible quality in the lens - do not do it.

As a sidenote ... I went with the cheaper (350$ new) Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR ... mainly because money is an important consideration for me. Granted, I would love to have the build quality and focus speed of the 28-70L or 24-70L, but if I can get a 70-200/4.0 L or 85/1.8 lens for the price difference, I'd rather have that. Of course I dream of upgrading once in the future ... but I don't think I will gain much in image quality, maybe some ounces of sharpness wide open, but nothing very dramatic.

Best regards,
Andy

Andy,

Very well put..i was thinking that also..maybe just a handful of people didnt like the 24-70 they received..it seems like alot on this forum but my guess is that are alot more people that are happy with theres''that just dont post it..i'll probably go with the 24-70 L 2.8 as its a couple hundred dollars cheaper here in Japan..

Cheaper than what?

I find it hard to believe that you would find anything that would be cheaper in Japan than somewhere else
(ok, maybe cheaper than in Denmark  )

I visited Japan the first time last year, and I was totally shocked to find that the prices for camera gear were a lot more expensive there than in Europe  ... after all my complaints about the European prices in comparison to US prices.

On a sidenote ... I was maybe the only person from my travel group that spent some hours in a camera shop to play with the 10D, DRebel, Pro1 and NOINK D70 (at that time not available yet in Europe) while the others were busy admiring the miracles of Osaka's Shinsaibashi shopping district

Best regards,
Andy

Andy,

i've been living in japan for 29 years living outside of tokyo city areas..seems you were in osaka..2nd biggest city in japan(shopping distract is for tourists..enflated prices)..prices are gonna be expensive there for sure..but there are tons of places that sell it hella lot cheaper than those dept stores you went to trust me.

after all canon is made in japan..you just gotta know where to look and im guessing you were on a trip to japan so i'm sure you didn't have enough time to actually get out and look around...

i was just wondering if i got the 24-70 L 2.8 for around 200dollars less than retail price here or is there a alternative lense within the range as good that i haven't heard of yet or seen..

by they way the 20d here is also a couple hundred dollars cheaper here than any stores i've seen online..(b&H...newegg..etc...)as well..guess cause its been out longer here than anywhere else..
