Hey all, How on earth do I properly calibrate my monitor so my colours and brightness are true?

Hi Joel,

If you want to do it properly, you need a hardware calibrator. It is a 'puck' that sits on your monitor and reads a selection of colour patches that the software puts up on screen. It then creates a profile that you select and that's it.

There are a couple of threads running at the moment in this very forum, but you might not recognise the title, so have a scout around. Hint Monaco, One eye, spyder.

Or, if you don't have the hardware (yet), and need to do it quick and not so dirty (hopefully  ), you can use the Adobe Gamma program if you are using Photoshop or PS Elements. It's found in the Control Panel (if running Windows). Since Adobe Gamma (make sure you set it to Expert mode) relies on your eyes for the adjustments, it won't be as accurate as the hardware approach. But it's still a lot better than not calibrating the monitor at all.

For a really quick and dirty way, go to the web side below. It will give you a good starting point. (It actually worked pretty good with my LCD, and I'm using sRBG.)

Thanks guys for all ur help. I tried the second option but did not have the greatest luck, I am going to try this third option and see how bad it is before going further.
Thanks again !

How are you coming to that conclusion?

The hardware approach gives you a sense of "it is right". With other approaches, how do you actually know?

i've borrowed an eye one from a friend but I am finding the instructions on how to use it very frustrating and not terribly helpful. can anyone give me a hand?
