hey guys,

i have the option of getting the nifty fifty or the kit lens..i only had enough dough to get my rebe xt body when i got it. I have my sigma24-80 which works great for me..right now. yes its not wide..thats the only reason im considering the kit lens.

I think you'll find hands down go for the Fifty.

50mm is a fine lens at a fine price but has only one range ... 50mm. If you only want to shoot 50mm then it's a fine choice, but you then have nothing on the wider end.

Obviously the 50mm gives a much better picture quality. However, if you think the sigma 28mm is not wide enough for your type of photgraphy, a prime len at 50mm would not help this regard at all. I would tend to get the kit lens since getting something between 18-28mm is better than not able to get anything at all in that range (except for good picture at 50mm). You can always buy the 50mm later, afterall, we are just talking about ~$70.

Buy the kit lens... it's a great learning tool. You should be able to come up with another $80 in a month or two for the EF-50 II. If your budget is so tight that this isn't an option, you might have to reconsider the whole DSLR business. I'm certainly not made of money, but am smart enough to know that cheap glass won't make you happy.

Lots of folks new to this hobby think there's an inexpensive route to good equipment. It's simply not true. It's also true that throwing money at the hobby won't make you a good photographer. Good photographers can (and do) make nice pictures with camera phones or single use cameras.

As I suggested above, buy the kit lens, then the "nifty fifty" a month or two later. It'll be fun to watch you pick for your next lens.

Nifty 50. Gosh, I'll sell you my kit lens cheap, it really never quite cut it for me.

I'd go with the kit. Gives wider coverage than you have now. I am also partial to zooms for their versatility. I seldom use my fifty unless I want to shoot in the dark without the flash ;-)

Both

So here is how you do it.

Option A
Get the nifty fifty, if Wepwawep comes through on the offer to sell you his kit lens cheap

Option B
Otherwise, get the kit lens. You can only get it with the camera or from eBay.
With eBay, you never know if you get a good one ... if you get a bad one from your dealer, you might be able to exchange it.
Get the nifty fifty a month or 2 later.

Best regards,
Andy

Go for the kits lens, better to be able to cover more subjects than image quality at you point right now. Also I have got some damn sharp shots with the kit lens.

I vote for the kit lens, mine is really sharp. Don't use it anymore, but only because I have the 17-40L.

IMHO, I would get the kit lens. Its not great but its pretty ok and extremely useful - especially at the wide end. Not too many at that end without blowing up a lot of cash. The 50 can be a good second purchase. Surely 75 bucks in 2-3 months cant be a bad amount to set aside??

i think the kit for a wider angle. the fifty is very nice, but hard up close.

If the Thrifty nifty fifty then kit lens.
If it is the nifty fifty then 24-70 f/2.8.

I have then Thrity nifty fifty and the kit and there are times that the kit lens comes in handy.
Unless you plan to buy more lens soon then it would make senseto get the thrifty fifty, but if funds are short then the thrifty fifty is really not an option up front. The kit lens is not a great lens but it covers alot of angle which is great if you don't have a large collection of lenses and not going to have more lenses in the foreseeable future.

I vote for nifty fifty too. However, if u still need an affortable WA, i would go with Sigma 18-125 DC f3.5-5.6. ;) See here (http://www.pbase.com/fstopjojo/4lenstest).
