I took this a while back, it was very dark and overcast, but thought that I would get some test shots, to see if it was worth going back when there was better light. I saw this staircase from the road and just had to get out and take some pics. Was just going over some of my past photos and thought I would try and rescue this one. I purposely over-saturated it, and added some lighting affects.
I wanted to emphasize the plants, living on the cold, lifeless stone.

hmmm, I would have gone the other way and not warmed it. Maybe dodge the "greens" and the leaves a bit to bring them out then but then I'd add some contrast and desat on the stairs and rail and wall. After that, get your burn tool handy and make those parts dingy as all get out. It might just be a personal taste thing but I think you really need a subject at the bottom of the stairs and use the rail as a leading line to it. That would create a much more imapctful image. As it stands, its not obvious what the subject really is here and that leaves the viewer yawning bit.

learn to selective saturate just the greens. Looks like in trying to make the green pop, you made everything saturated.

I think the original is better, the other is way to saturated, if you want the greens to pop use selective colour to enhance greens then add bump up green saturation if you need to. By cranking them all up you have just made it over saturated and the image looks to warm. After saturating the greens desat the rest sligthy, then do some Dodge and Burn.

Well seem you have "Image editing OK" on, I thought I would show you what Im talking about, then it might make more sense. This took not even 5 mins I used your original picture.

I like what you did. But I really like the red leaves though. If only there weren't reds in the wall. It would take quite a long time selecting just the grass and leaves. I might give it a go though.
I'm basically trying to take a drab image and make it pop, just for the challenge of it. Wanting to improve my PS skills. Anyone else can have a go at it, if they want.

Not, bad not bad.
I did a lot of selective coloring. Turned the walls black and white and upped the contrast on them. I left the stairs themselves alone, as well as the handrail. Changed the saturation of the greens and the reds.
I think this is more what I envisioned.
