Just picked up the 1D MarkII and I am noticing that I can get away with using more USM......or even need to use more than I did on the 20D. I thought I saw a chart somewhere that listed a P&S, REBEL, & 20D and showing the amount of in camera sharpening. And if I remember right the 1D had a lot less than the 20D. Even if the 1D does have sharpening 1-5, and the 20D only has 3 amounts........and both at there max shapening. Which one has more? KInda making me feel like I am getting soft images from the 1D, and I know that can't be the case.

From what I have read and from present experience the 1D MK II images are probabley a bit on the soft side straight out of the camera. However this camera can take a great deal of USM before halos and artifacts crop in.
The sharpening you are talking about ( 1-5 and 1-3 ) are for JPG only. If you shoot RAW, and I do, then forget about this and sharpen later in PS. The 1D MK II can take a great deal of USM.
Hope this helps,

I think the chart you are referring to is in this document, page 26:

According to that document, the default JPEG sharpening settings on the 1D Mk II are indeed less sharp than parameter 2 on the 20D. I almost always shoot RAW on my 20D, and if I shoot JPEG I always have it on the lowest sharpening setting.

THANK YOU.....whew......I was get a bit tense there.....LOL I was using about 150 USM for the 20D, canon say to start at 300 with the 1D.
VERY helpfull info......and yes that was the chart I had saw before.
Interesting they they recomend to NOT recompose (after focus lock) close up or portraits......still trying to figure that out?? Why not? Instead they say to us a off center focus point......interesting.
