So I pickec up a 20D today for my trip on Monday and since I have a 10D, it feels really simular - so that is goodness. But when I took my first shots - I could not beleive it. It has to be twice as loud as the 10d. Is this normal? I think the shutter is even noisier then my old film camera with transport. Could be I am just imagining it... but if anyone else has upgraded - I would love to know if any of you notice any difference.

The 20D definately has a different sound than the 10D and due to the difference in sound tones and quicker timing, it sounds much louder to me than the 10D. I was worried it would alarm the subjects I like to photograph (animals, birds), but has not seemed to bother them any more than other cameras that I have used. I LOVE my 20D.. Neatest camera I have ever had.
Enjoy !!

After using the 300D tonight, you are right the 20D's shutter is LOUD!!!
I usually like it, except during a wedding, it seems SO loud during the ceremony. I am seriously thinking of using the 300D for most of my ceremony shots.

Yes, don't you love it?

Mine goes THWAK, THWAK, THWAK so smoothly.

It seems to be just as loud with all my lens, EF-S & EF lens.

Yes, the 20D is loud and much louder than the XT, but you get used to it after awhile, then all the other cameras are too quiet. :)

I've never heard a 20D go, but my new EOS-3 has a very loud sound. Maybe they gave the 20D the EOS-3 parts.

This is just a guess, but it may not be a louder shutter. It could be the lens.

I have a 10D which takes only the EF lenses. I bought the 18-55mm EF-S kit lens and modified it to fit it. With the EF-S lens on the 10D the shutter noise is much louder, and I attribute it to the hollow rear of the lens. The EF lens -- even the ones with the plastic mount-- are much more substantial than the EF-S lens that I have. The EF-S lens that I have has much less mass and therefore transmits sound more efficiently.

Is the 20D as loud with other lenses?

This is just a guess.

I tried it only with one lens - 17-40L - and there is a large difference between the sound made on the 20D versus 10D... guess I will use the 10D for sound sensitive situations....the 20D would have been very obtrusive last week at the US Open. I will try the 20D on my other lenses later and see if there is any difference based on the lense used.

At least I am not the only one who noticed the difference....

Cheers.

I think I am going to find the same....

Yes you are right on. After using my 20D for about a month I grabbed my wifes 300D (my old camera) and thought "what a wimpy sound" Loud hasn't bothered me.

Yes the shutter is loud ,but it did give an owl that startled look when I took the first shot:shock: . So you see ,it has it's uses:D
