So, the band I'm in, russians, and four others put on an eclectic show last night. The show was highly publicized inthe local paper, see my other thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=617445#post617445. I figured having four bands in one night would be a good photographic opportunity. Well, halfway through the first band, it was becoming apparent that the light guy had a definite preference for the red spotlights. For anyone that has shot live bands in clubs, you'll know that red is not a fun color to deal with. I did a little research, (asked the bartender) and found out what the light guy was drinking. Two pale ales later and a strong suggestion to use the blue and green lights, and I was in business. The really funny thing was that while we played, I don't think there a single red light on through the whole set. I don't think he realized I wouldn't be photographing myself playing....

Anyway, the show went well, and I got some good shots off. As did a few other photogs. I'll be posting some soon. If there is anyone with a similar story, please, feel free to share here.

I talk to the lighting directors all the time, if the club/ concert is lucky enough to have a full time Lighting director.

The club I am shooting in most currently has really limited lighting on the DJ booth. THey have soemr eally nice lights, but they are directed all on the main fllor and back bars. I end up using my flash onthr DJ because of this.

The computer controlled lighting systems are the easiest to change, but if they are using a analog control board, they are more reluctant to move the lights.

Since I have been to many clubs all over the US, there is a very different feeling is each city on the way the lighting should be.

Miami - loves expensive lighting systems, with Cooled Hydeorgren systems
NYC- is a step down from Miami but still nice system
Detroit - Like the Dark clubs, more warehouse style, with not many lights on the DJ
Las Vegas- Is on par with Miami.
Toronto - Is hit or miss depending on the clubs, but the big ones do it right.

This place isn't so elaborate....if I had to name it, I'd call it "Home Depot/Home Made Rochester Style. It isn't that bad, but you get the idea.
