How long is it appropriate to wait?

So, I’m wondering how long after you’ve bought a lens does it take before you start wondering about your next acquisition? I guess it also does depend on what lens one has bought last :)

Hmm, I didn't know there was a waiting period ;)

I continually have a list of possible acquisitions. Some equipment is based on business needs, some based on desirability and some are plain "wow, that's cool". The list is always in flux but the most prevalent acquisitions are based on business needs.

If shooting was just a hobby my rate of acquisition would directly correlate to my disposable income ;) If you have the extra coin burning holes in your pocket I don't see any reason to have a wait period - lol!

:) I got the 24-70L in December... needed it for a wedding. Now, it's a great lens, and very useful... but I can't stop looking at photos taken with the 135L... and I feel guilty.

I think it is inversly proportional to the time spent playing with the new lens.

I have to say it can be as little as 5 mins - last lens I bought I was already planning the next one!

I don't know. It just depends on what new perspective I decide to explore. My last was the 16-35L. Wow, that 16mm is wide.

I've bought lenses in batches, so the waiting period was just that between checking out one lens to pulling the next one out of the shipping box.

Going on a B&H shopping spree can be scary stuff:)!

The 27-70 is a superb lens, but it's not a critically desirable lens or one that you would stake an important job on. Lenses like the 135L, the 85L, and the 24L are, though. I think at least one top spec prime is essential in any camera setup.

I'm not so sure I agree with that. The 24-70 is an amazing lens and for people who prefer zooms over primes, like me at the moment, it will always come through for me when shooting. Obviously you prefer primes and the 24-70 just isn't in the same league in your mind though :)

Nah, I love the 24-70, it's my favourite lens. But I just can't rely on it for pin sharp images on a shoot. It's more than good enough for everything else though.

That's exactly what I was referring to. I'd love to one day own some L primes for the speed and sharpness but until then, the 24-70 is my go to lens and I love it :)

had the primes, great lenses. Now its zooms, great lenses too. the 135 is the top canon lens on a full frame in my opinion, but as soon as I had it I wanted the 200 to go along with it. then I realised the 70-200 would cover both with clarity that is hard to distinguish, but giving up some speed for the usability of the zoom. that led to selling my 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 to get the 24-70, I would say that the waiting period between lenses is limited only by your own guilt over lusting heavily over something, only to pass it by for the next new acquisition. I feal no guilt, I honor no waiting periods. Now I lust for that 16-35, and think about times it would be a better tool than my 17-40, wich replaced the 20-35 that came after the 28-105. I have a pelican case that would hold all my lenses, but I know I will be sorry if I pluck the foam cause I will probably just sell some geer for that 300L!

I'm still waiting for a 1.4x TC to turn up - it's been two years...
