Today someone asked me why I shot RAW + jpeg. The only answer I could come up with was, "uhhh . . . so I'll have both."
My friend wasn't satisfied with that answer and come to think of it neither was I.
Why DO I shoot RAW + jpeg instead of just RAW?

I shoot RAW only,... for two reasons..

1] I never need a jpeg..

2] If I did need a jpeg.. I can use BreezeBrowser to extract the embedded half size jpeg found in ALL Canon RAW files.. (at least every Canon I have owned from D60 - 1D MkII and 20D)

The ONLY time I shoot RAW plus Jpeg is I am doing something for where I work where I might also want a RAW file.. (for work means simply archiving some dumb a$$ thing or another... like new seats being installed) Work has no use for RAW.. so it's jpeg. But if I see I might want an image for my own uses I shoot raw & jpeg.. jpeg for work,. RAW for me.

I always shoot RAW+Jpeg. Steals some emory, but that's not a problem, I have enough CFs to cover all I need.

The reason for this is that most of my candids are good enough (at least for sharing with friends) directly in jpeg, and I do not want to get bored in converting everythig for emailing or whatever.

But it does happen also in my casual shooting that I have a keeper or two. If that happens, I want the RAW to be available just in case I need it (and if its a keeper, chances are I'll do).

So, to be on the safe side, I shoot both.

Only if a need quick and long bursts, I turn to plain jpeg to override the buffer limitations.

My reason for RAW & Small JPEG:

So the old lady can see them and because I don't want to convert all the RAWs to TIFF16 (it takes up too much room even on DVD). So I just exact the JPEG out and leave it in Film Factory for her to see.

if you shoot both Raw and jpeg you will have the digital negative "RAW" file and and easy to access jpeg also. It takes awhile to convert from RAW to TIFF. To convert a whole batch of RAW files takes forever

I shoot RAW + JPG if I know I will be transferring the card to my Epson P2000.
The P2000 will show the RAW but will show and zoom the jpg.
Also If I'm on holiday or away for the weekend my wife likes to view the shots on the P2000 as a slideshow which again needs the jpg.
