Just wanted to see what advice people on here can give to help me improve

They're both good, second one better. This kind of shot is tough when the sun is high and the sky is bright. Circular polarizer helps by cutting sky brightness and allowing longer exposure (less of a dark subject). Or, wait for sundown and put camera on tripod, try to catch as last rays hit castle.

Thanks for the comments - much appreciated.
It is not actually a castle as such, but a folly, built hundreds of years ago on high ground to scare of somebody or others armies, but it is known as Mow Cop Castle
It can be seen miles and miles away in all directions and is built near the borders of Staffordshire and Cheshire, at Mow Cop, England. (Close to Stoke on Trent)

There are other ways to control the contrast using PS, but it's better to get the shot 'right' in the 1st place.
