As E.J. Peiker says, the purpose of the setting 1 or 2 is to keep AF locked even if you move focus ring. Very good e.g. with 85/1.2L where focus ring is very sensitive.

Thanks Pekka. Does option 1 and 2 only work with certain lenses? I just quickly tried option 1 with my 24-70 and was still able to knock the focus out by turning the MF ring?

The manual, page 149, lists the lenses this C.Fn funcion is applicable for and the 24-70 is not one of them.
