I am new to the canon D20 world and I used non auto focus A1 many years ago. I also used Panasonic LC5 as my first digital with great shots, a bit slow and a little bit too much noise. I bought the Canon D20 kit with 17-85 IS USM thinking that this must be the best. I have big problems getting sharp photos at mid range pictures. All shots taken fairly close up are great and any shots which I take with the auto focus set to only center spot seems to work well, What am I doing wrong?

Boy, you gotta supply more info or a sample pix - too many things it could be - including you.

Welcome Maillf
Do what works ... use AF and fix AF at the centre point rather than let the camera decide. I think most people do that much of the time. I tried MF for a while and it didn't work very well.

I would thought that if full automatic mode with all the autofocus points in action that this should give quick and good results. Normally this is the case with compact cameras. Why would I need to go to center point to get good results. Surely the range of autofocus points are there to give a broader range or view like the human eye.

Apparently you have expections based on how compact cameras work. But that is not how a D-SLR works.
For this shot, we don't know what sort of aperture you used, so we have no way of knowing whether you had a very limited depth of field. We don't know what sort of shutter speed you used, so we have know way of knowing whether camera shake comes to play.
