What the hell HS gym gets 1600/620 @2.8. Why would you bother with strobes with that light. Nicely done Matt.

lol yeah when I got there I said to myself I might as well just shoot ambient.

The bad part, there were really hot areas on the floor and the light was very very flat. If I shot proper exposure the players skin looked very flat because of the lights, but if I underexposed they looked better. Kinda weird.

I guess they had a bunch of lights out and replaced the bulbs this year and they are those super super bright almost blue like lights.

On one end I could shoot 1600 ISO F2.8 1/640th and on the other end I needed 2000/2500 F2.8 1/640th.

Good stuff as always. And about as good as it gets without lights!

Matt, these are quite nice indeed. No idea on the underexposure thing but you have enough contrast there to keep things from looking flat.

here is what I meant by really flat lighting. I tried but there was nothing I could do to liven up the image

I see what you mean. I'll take flat and clean over some of the stuff I've gotten shooting ambient in some of our gyms though. Later on, I'll take a stab at it and see if I can get any pop from it. If I can, I'll post the result and process.

We were just busting his chops.
Matt is a pioneer in these parts with strobed sports. :D

Matt, I was looking at your gear list. What lens did you shoot these with? The 70-200L I image. But I was wondering if you use the 17-50 f2.8 Tamron for Basketball too?

Nice images. That 7D has really special high ISO characteristics!

Nice shots Matt.

I always shoot ambient, since I'm usually tight on time, and I'm lazy. But I do know of those issues all to well. Different colored bulbs, new ones being brighter, hot spots on floors. I've shot gyms where I could get ISO 2000 in one spot, 10ft to the left I needed 6400 for proper exposure.

But shooting ambient in bad lighting is a skill I'm still trying to master, its an art, a talent and skill set that's required for great shots. Just another example of how knowing what your doing is often way better than what your doing it with.

Chase,

Those were with the 70-200. I do use the Tamron for sure, not a ton but I do use it every once in a while. AF is not great, better walk around lens, portrait type lens but it does just fine for me.

Without a doubt ambient is much much harder. I always shoot raw when shooting ambient, as you knows it allows for more leeway in post processing.
