Well, guessing game, almost as the Exif is intact. Problem though, the Exif tells lies. Here are some shots from today at Croft ,taken at the focal lengths in the title. The 840mm shot(s) are by stacking a 1.4 and 2.0 TC on my 300 2.8IS. You should be able to spot them, and there is one dead giveaway (secret - shhh).
The conclusion of my playing around with stacked TC's is, I wish Canon would make a 800mm prime and stacking TC's is a really desperate thing to do.

I experimented with some new shooting spots as well, and dragged poor Ian H along with me in the morning and Simon H in the afternoon. Good fun and decent weather. Back there tomorrow for more of the same.

Without finding the EXIF info, I'm stumped, where's the secret? (I have a feeling it's the last two photos though...) Picture quality is pretty good considering the stacking.

Are the blue Formula Ford and silver Lotus the stacked ones?

K&N Saloon and Formula Renault shots?.... seriously I can't tell for sure, was hoping a giveaway might be the aperture/shutter changes because of the TC combo..
Either way, the quality is good imo and I've been learning a lot from your motorsport shots:cool:

I would have to say K&N Saloon and My Legends Buddies were captured with the stacked converters, as the cars are very similar in apparent size. They don't get very much smaller the further back they are. But then, what do I know?

Based on the appearance of the out-of-focus areas, I agree with Jake that the extenders were on the KandN and the formula renault shots. the flowers in the foreground and the bushes in the background seem to have choppier edges than I expect from such a lens. but I easily could be wrong.

OK, I'll let the other shoe drop as they say here. It is the two FR shots. The giveaway is the heat haze in the background. The longer the focal length the shorter the perspective and the background appears closer, thereby showing the effect of the heat haze to a greater degree.
The Lotus by the way was taken with my 1D (original 4mp) and 100-400L and I just put it in there to confuse the issue. There are more 840mm shots in my post of the second day at Croft. I am seriously thinking of a 600mm for next season and some of this last weekend's tests were to see where a 600 with 1.4 would fit at that particular circuit. I like the rough edged, slam in your face, driving off the page look of some of the shots I have taken with this combo. Now I have to see if my publishers like them. I'll repeat the test during practice and qualifying at Oulton Park this coming weekend.

Sorry but I am not into motorsport, what is "FR" ?

If you look at the pictures above, FR is short for Forumula Renault.

I read somewhere that the stacking order can really change qaulity? I have been thinking about getting the 300 2.8 and both t cons. I heard people saying the 2x is poor even on the sharpest lenses, but even with em stacked, I don't have a problem with these shots. Guess things maybe alot more noticable full size, but still, this is making me want these items even more. And dam your kit list looks like the ultimate combo for anything.

 Why muck about? Just stick a 2x TC on your 500mm... then you wouldn't have to leave home at all :p ;)
Nice shots, Ken.

I did look at the pictures I posted on this thread two days ago as well and looking again I still dont see why I should know the FR = Formual Renault, but I know now don't I

You speak of the haze, but what about the "mirage" that can appear on hot days.
This was my first shoot using a 200mm, and i thought this render was pretty damn cool.

KennyG,
Of the lenses that you listed, which do you think you use most for your work. I am trying to decide which lens to purchase - 300mm 2.8L or the 400mm 2.8L. I don't shoot for a living and so I will have to live with this choice for a few years. I shoot mostly youth sports and already have a 70-200 2.8 ex Sigma. I am leaning toward the 300 and getting a 1.4x tc as I am thinking the 400 might be a little long for what I do. I plan to rent both first prior to purchase. Any input that you could provide would be great. Thanks in advance.

Go for the 300 2.8IS. Canon state it is their fastest focussing lens and I am inclined to believe it. It also is the most flexible of the 'sports' primes. You get the best 300mm anywhere, a 420mm (using a 1.4tc) that is almost as good as a native 400 and a 600mm (using a 2.0tc) that would pass muster with all but a 600mm owner. The "Swiss Army Knife" of sports primes and an investement you won't be sorry about down the line.

I have the 300 canon and the sigma zoom... wonderful pairing - 300 stays on the 20d and sigma on my 10d..... you won't regret it for field sports.
Cadwell - great shots as usuall - you never fail to inspire.
