I've had an absolutely awesome day out at the Goodwood Festival of Speed today. What an amazing array of cars and bikes, new and old. Fantastic.
Anyway, I took the camera mounted with the trusty Sigma 70-300 and filled up a couple of CF cards with shots. I had a great time learning how to shoot moving stuff as this was the first time I had tried.
I've just started working through some of the shots I took and these are some of my faves so far. Please feel free to critique both my shooting technique and cropping of the images - I haven't tried this kind of photography before.
The vast majority of them were taken ISO400 in Av mode with AF set in AI mode.
Enjoy! :D

Great sharp shops nitsch.
I'm happy to see what the 70-300 APO can do as I'll be going at Tremblant in July for the Legends meet. If I can do shots half as good as yours, I'll be happy :)
Thanks for sharing.
PS: About the AI mode used, you meant AI Servo right ?

Thanks guys! Glad you like them.
Robert - Yes, I'm continually impressed with the Sigma it's just awesome considering the price I paid. The AF mode was set to AI mode as I have a hacked 300D and AF Servo doesn't work properly. In AI mode the camera kicks into Servo mode as soon as it detects movement of the subject so I found it worked well for these shots. As I said this was the first time I had tried this kind of thing so I may not have been doing it the correct way but it seemed to work for me! :)

I can't belive some of the shots you take with the £140 Sigma 70-300 APO!! If you changed your sig to, say, 70-200mm f4 or 100-400mm IS no one would ever guess
I must check out the AI mode in the hack, though my subjects are usually pretty static.

I just love the Panasonic Toyota F1 car doing the burn out. You did a nice job of freezing the smoke coming off the rear meats.

Cheers Condyk! That's quite a compliment coming from you with your experience of zoom lenses :), one day I hope to own some L glass (if the wife lets me! LOL) but for now the Sigma is more than earning its keep. :D

That was Olivier Panis in the Toyota, I think he was trying to outdo Sato who had been completely destroying the BAR's tyres all the way up the track much to everyone's delight! The noise was just unbelievable! :D

Thanks Bruce, I only got a few on the rally course but didn't stay long because I kept getting showered with dust and gravel which wasn't ideal!
Yep, that's Panis, he certainly put on a good show. You got some great pics of the drivers which is cool, I don't know why I didn't think to take any... I guess I was transfixed by the cars! :)
