Im debating over macro lens. Looking at the following:
Canon Telephoto EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Autofocus Lens
Canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens
Or
Sigma Telephoto 180mm f/3.5 EX APO Macro IF HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS
Sigma Telephoto 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS
Anyone have pictures so I can see the difference between the 100 Canon and 105 Sigma- and then the 180 Canon and 180 Sigma ?
Need to decide if I want 100/105 or 180m, then Canon or Sigma, care to offer some input ?

all my photos here were taken with the canon 180mm f/3.5L with MT-24EX on 10D. i'm very happy with the 180, though i can't offer any comparison with the other lenses you mentioned.

I think the biggest consideration between 100mm and 180mm is what kid of subject you see yourself photographing. The 180mm lens will allow the same magnification from a further distance than the 100mm. It may be easier to capture insects with the 180mm with less chance of disturbing them.
There's a huge price difference, and the Canon 100mm macro is a very highly regarded lens around here. For image quality the 180mm will have the edge, but not by very much considering the cost...

Rent - Very nice pictures thanks for sharing. The ants one is my favorite I thought right away " You go first" as if the ants were talking to one another. haha
scr7b - You make a good point. I'll save a few pennies and go with the 100m like Rent has. Like you said just wont be able to get as close but I can use the extra pennies I'd be saving towards another peice of glass.
Thanks!
Edit* Can they be used with a teleconverter ?

thanks for the comments.
i have the 180 which yeah is kinda expensive, but gives you (albeit small amount of) more working distance. search the forums here someone made a very nice analysis of $ savings vs. gain in working distance.
the 180mm can be used with a TC. i don't think the canon TC's work with the 100.

yeah the 180 is listed as compatible with both canon TC's (check out the TC sticky at the top of this forum), and i have personally used the 1.4x with it (wayyyyy too much magnification though, but it was fun).
i think some third-party TC's would work with the 100. but maybe someone with such a setup can confirm this.

Hmm to much magnification huh? Maybe Ill stick with the 100m instead use the extra 600 towards another lens from the price difference between the 100 and 180.
If only it wasnt back ordered with B&H haha. Thanks for the help.
