View Full Version : What's the next best camera below the S90?

I am selling or G10, as my we want a real pocket camera.

I was pretty much settled in on the S90, however, my wife would like one without all the bells and whistles I want.

Since I have to give up controls, I do not really want to lose too much picture quality.

So, what's the next best pocket camera down from the S90; Does not have to be Canon (did I say that!)

Thank you,......marc

I was actually considering the Sony TX 7. That seems really, really nice.

(admittedly though, not exactly short on bells & whistles)

Why not get the S90 and tell her not to ring the bells and blow the whistles and you can do that and both of you be happy?

If you are both going to use it, get an SX200. It doesn't do RAW, but the JPGs are fantastic. She can use it in Auto mode for snapshots, and you can take advantage of the semiauto and manual modes (Av, Tv, and M).

Here are a couple of JPGS taken with our SX200IS while in Mexico.

No, wait. Tell her the 5D Mk II has auto like any other P&S. Now there's an all-round win!

What the heck....if you are going that route...a new 1D4 wins!

Nope. No Green Box. The 5D2 has one.

Or cut 1/3 of the price and get the Panasonic DMC FX150. 6 mm thinner than S90, 4 mm shorter - makes room for only a 2.7" screen fit for 4:3 aspect ratio as against S90's 3.0" screen, which also fits for 4:3. The S90 does 16:9 widescreen too, while the FX150 does 16:9 as well as also 3:2 aspect ratio - though this deminishes the screen quite a bit.

The FX150 has a very advanced Auto-intelligence mode like the S90, and they both do RAW files. For AEB the FX150 has only 2EV span, while the S90 has 4EV span, and generally the FX150 has a little fewer manual control modes than the S90.

If you can live with the smaller screen, the FX150 is certainly worth considering! It has no fuzzy control dial like the S90! Picture quality in low light is on debate, but I've seen a lot of great shots done with the FX150 - and it has a smart function to limit the ISO choise to e.g. ISO400. Likewise I've seen troublesome picture quality made by the S90 in bright daylight at full wideangle!

I'd say the FX150 is fully worth the money.
