I know there are a lot of posts on this already. I am thinking of getting the Phottix but I know that you cannot mount a flash on it. I also know that I can get a Pocketwizard which will allow me to mount a flash but it is a ton more money. Are there alternatives to Pocketwizards so I can have a wireless shutter release and be able to also mount my 430 EX II?

Why would you want to mount a flash on a remote shutter release? The Phottix doesn't have to be mounted on the camera's hot shoe so you can still attach your flash to the hot shoe when you're using the remote shutter release. If, however, you want to use the wireless unit to fire an off-camera flash, you'll need something other than a basic wireless shutter release, something like a Pocket Wizard (which can also be used to trip the shutter on your camera, if you need that functionality).

Jon,

The reason why is if I want to use my tripod and not cause any movement but in a scenario where I still need my flash and using off-camera flash isn't feasible due to the environmental conditions.

It looks like in that case, I would need to use a Pocketwizard or just let the Phottix dangle so I can attach the flash to the hotshoe.

Thanks for the reply

The Phottix receiver isn't heavy. No need to have it shoe-mounted. I don't bother securing my remotes to the camera when I'm using them. If it bothers you, get some Velcro, stick a piece of the hook material to the receiver and some loop material to the tripod. Or put an MP3/phone wrist loop on it and loop that over something on the tripod.

I have a Phottix wireless shutter trigger and I always let it dangle. It is a great trigger too with a very decent range. Not to be confused with the Phottix wireless flash trigger though, the two are different things.

Agree with everything said above (just let it dangle or rubber-band it to the tripod).

Though I think we need to clarify "Phottix".

- Most people here seem to have the "Cleon" 433 MHz version with the dorky pull-out antenna.

- I got the Phottix "Plato" because it's 2.4 GHz, uses AAA batteries and has interchangeable cables. Works great.

If I'd have to do it over again now though - and seeing that you do seem to have a flash, I'd go with the RF-602 instead now. They're also 2.4 GHz and can double as flash triggers.

I am very happy with the wireless remote shutter release I got from the POTN store (http://www.procameragear.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/46_48). I got the wireless RS-80N3 replacement unit to use with my 20D. It works quite well.
