As requested in the 85mm shootout thread:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=81718

Comparison at 17mm between the 17-85 and 17-40, and I added the 10-22 for good measure!

There's a clear winner here... I'm surprised the 10-22 didn't come out better than this, but I even repeated the test with 17-85 and 10-22 with manual focus, to be sure they were fair comparisons.

As before, tripod mounted, cable release and mirror lockup.

Again, You are comparing an EF-S lens with an EF.

17 mm EF-S is equvillent to 17 mm on 35 mm film
17 mm EF is equvillent to 28 mm on 35 mm film

To do a fair comparison here You should zoom the EF-S lens to 28 mm.

I'm not getting through to this guy... Could someone else step in and tell him that 17mm EF-S = 17mm EF!!

Sorry but Canon says otherwise

Couldn't find a document for the EF-S 17-85 lens.

Tommy, the EF-S tag refers to the mount, it has no bearing on the effective focal length, the 1.6x crop factor still applies.

Eg. The 18-55 EF-S kit lens is in 35mm terms really a 28-88mm lens.

Hope this helps. I know this confuses a lot of peeps! :)

The focual length does not change with crop factor, it is a physical constant, no matter it is EF-S, EF or other mounts.

Tommy:
Where does it say that?
"With its effective focal length range of approximately 16-35mm in 35mm format, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a....."
EF of EF-S doesn't matter, they are measured the same way, it's only the mount that differs (well, not ONLY of course).

A nice shootout, would have been great to see the 16-35mm as well though... ;)
I just wish my 17-40 would arrive soon, but out of stock of course *sigh*

Ok, I'll just be happy that I don't own any EF-S lenses to confuse matters ;-)

Nice comparison.

Glad to see my most expensive lens, seems worth the money I paid!
(US$1065), as NZ is a rip off for cameras and electronic equipment.

Sorry for the confusion. It seems I didn't read my own link properly

No problem! ;) It seems that EF-S has confused a lot of people!
