Hey!!
I've been reached by some relative of my relative to shoot the birthday event of her 5 years old daughter. I've no idea how to cover the whole event.. Can anyone please give me some good ideas and examples (couldnt find any on this forum).
The b'day will be indoors, probably in a restaurant. I have the kit lens, sigma 75-300, and canon 100 mm, canon speedlight 580. Which lens would be suitable for shooting?
What price should i quote?

To be honest. A 50mm WONT be good enough by itself especially if you are working in tight conditions and need to take some group photos etc. You want a wide prime or a wide angle zoom coupled with an external flash
Have a good read at this

Same concept applied to what I did a while back.

Looks like you know how to take the pics, use whichever lens you need to but take all of them just in case.
Price is pretty relative to what you want to charge, depends on what it costs you to do the shoot. Take your expenses down from the whole day (include post processing time) and subtract that from the amount of money you want to pay yourself. That's about as nitty gritty as it gets.
Theoretically you should be taking tax too, though I'm not sure how that works in the USA.
For myself, covering an event - $100/hourly covers my time and gas.
Then whatever the prints cost me, multiply the cost of creation by something like 2 (also equate for shipping and packaging, so probably 2.75x)
If it costs me $28 to create 1 12x18" print, then I would charge the client something like $70-75.
Hope that helped. Have fun and post your pictures on the forum when you get them ! Your macro work is pretty stunning. Try to get some shots where you can really get in close to get the cool bokeh that Elysium demonstrates in his.

Yes indeed! You are so right Elysium....
I have the 50mm f/1.4 and I love it.... However, for group shots and tight little areas it was bit of a challenge...
So, I grabbed a 17-70mm Sigma to hold me over! I think its about f/2.8 and pretty good in ight-lighting! hahah

Yep you need a wide lens. I used the 28 to 75 and 10 to 20
Good luck :)

yeah, indoor parties are hard to cover. specially in tight spaces like a restaurant. UWA is best to use, 50 1.8 is good too.
hope all goes well for you!

Glad to hear you had a good time and a pleasant experience. :)
I would add a small one in the corner. Nothing too obtrusive.
