View Full Version : Hand Straps?

I recently upgraded to the T1i. I'm not a big fan of neck straps and am currently using a Canon WS20 wrist strap that I bought for my old Powershot S3. Since it's a wrist strap, it doesn't really secure the camera to my hand, but more just provides some safety in the change that i were to drop the camera accidentally. I'm looking for something that attaches more securely to my hand and allows me to not have to hold the camera the entire time. I've seen the thread about the Canon E-1 hand strap, but it seems like that requires the battery grip to work right. I also saw this Zing hand strap on B&H's website: Zing Wrist Strap (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=113804&is=REG)
It says that it attaches to the tripod mount and the existing side strap slot and can also be used with a neck strap. Does anyone have experience with this strap? I'm trying to find out if it's useful, secure, etc. I also use a tripod fairly often and was wondering if I would have to take off this strap every time I wanted to do that.
I've also seen an Opteka strap that provides a tripod mounting thread, but have read reviews that it makes it difficult to reach the buttons on the back of the camera.
Any other hand strap suggestions would also be appreciated.

i had the same issue about the neck straps, and ended up going with the Canon E-1 strap.
I didn't have a grip either, so you will need to purchase a camera plate from either Kirk or RRS. They have a loop in the plate where the strap can connect to.
That would be your best option. The camera plates cost about $50 new, but they are better than some of the other cheap plastic plates.
Hope this helps

the three on this page are very good quality, and very good prices. this is also a very reliable company with fantastic customer service and shipping speed, even though they're across the pacific.

I use hand straps made by the Camdapter. Link below. Use them in conjunction with a neck strap at times. Has tripod mount they don't interfere with battery removal/install. Lots of different styles of hand, wrist, and neck straps out there....sometimes its a matter of trying some to see what works best for you.

Sorry to HiJack this thread a bit, but can handstraps be used with the neckstrap? Or is it one or the other.

Yes, they can be used in conjunction. I personally keep the handstrap on at ALL times, and I have a neckstrap with quick release buckles to get it out of my way when I dont need it.

Not sure about all of them but the one I use (see above) is used with a neck/over the shoulder strap.

get a grip and get the e-1 strap.
grip makes the camera feel more balanced to me especially on the small entry cameras, more battery life, vertical shooting, and now you can attach the hand strap.
i just switched to the e-1 strap about 1 week ago and i love it, no more dangling neck strap to get in the way. i buddy bought one of those hand straps that mount on the tripod mount and it works ok. i like my e-1 strap better

Subscribing to this. I have an E-1 handstrap when I had my grip. I loved it. I'm currently switching to the dark side and I'm debating about putting a hand strap on that camera. I'd like to see what other people are using also

I have E-1 straps on my gripped 500D and 300D as well as quick release/attach Tamrac neck straps. A very convenient combination that allows me to vary my setup from hand carry to thin neck strap to wide neck strap depending on the type of shoot.

I also use the E-1 on my camera because I always found myself just twisting the neckstrap around my wrist, but that got cumbersome.

I have this setup from eBay on both my 50D and 7D. Very, very nice quality and comes with the plate. I like feel much more than the E-1 that I tried.

Just be aware, many of the grips are universal. One size fits all. Products like the "CamAdapter" has a compatibility chart and made for specific cameras. Chart shows which to buy if you have a battery grip or not. Also, they won't interfere with battery removal. I learned this the hard way and purchased an off-brand hand grip that required the hand grip to be removed from the bottom of the camera before I could swap out the battery. Pain in the arse.
