View Full Version : So Apple's new release got me thinking...

When do you think canon will come out with something truly revolutionary among the DSLR world? Apple continues year after year to create products that really change peoples lives. (in a way) Sure canon has the new 7D and 5D Mk II, which err both game changing cameras. But when will we see something completely new to DSLR's? I'm not talking about shooting HD video or anything. Don't get me wrong, i absolutely love all my canon gear and never see myself changing brands. I can't even think of much they could do. What are some ideas you can come up with for DSLR's that have never been seen before?

Well, it wouldn't be totally revolutionary, but I think it would be pretty sweet to see a version of Hasselblad's True Focus technology come to a DSLR...though I have no idea how well it actually works or how useful it would be in practice.
Btw, what's so revolutionary about a big iPod Touch?

It costs about as much as a Kindle and does way more than what a Kindle does. Plus it has a IPS display to show off all my fancy photos.

I think the major misnomer here is the term revolutionary. It most certainly is not, but is merely evolutionary at best.
Btw, I think Canon and the 5D2 video was pretty groundbreaking actually. I mean, before it, there was nothing even remotely capable of that type of video quality that had a slew of cheap lenses to go with it.
I also thing the Canon 300D was a pretty big party crasher, as it made digital photography possible for many many people and really started the digital landslide.

Drooling over iPad right now. Trying to talk to the wife into getting one for her birthday so I can use it for live view shooting and HDR shooting. How about HDR on the fly on iPad.
It's also a great device to backup pictures on the fly when on long trip.
My dream: use iPad to sync camera and various flash/lighting system. Adjust flash power ratio and etc. Maybe a light meter w/ a USB feedback loop.

I don't find it all that great. 1024x768, 16 GB and 1 Ghz... sounds like the specs of a cheap-ish netbook, and they cost less. I'm sure it will be great and all, but I would wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation before I hop on board. Completely disgussed that they're still using that horrific UI for such a wonderful device- my money is on the fact that they will release a new firmware/UI for the next generation iPad and the new iPhone, whenever it comes out.

My thoughts exactly. Don't forget the 5D classic, which made FF available in a smaller body, along with an affordable price. I'd love to have eye-focus back, and higher flash sync speeds, but even those are not "new" or revolutionary.

And typing on a screen sucks, and likely will always suck. Netbooks win by a long shot for anyone who has any serious amount of writing to do.
The iPhone was revolutionary when it was released...the iPad, not so much, from my view.
I don't think the technology exists for a huge revolution in DSLRs. EVFs? No serious photographers want them, at their current state of development. Formfactor isn't likely to change until the mirror box can be eliminated, and that means a great EVF.
IS technology has come a long way, along with 1080p/24 video, so there's been some significant leaps. Look at the 7D compared to the 50D...quite a leap in technology there.

You could do all this with a $300-400 Netbook running windows or linux. Plus the $900 one only has 64GB, so that's not exactly a huge amount of storage. Just buy a bunch of $20 8GB cards.
Looks purty, but I can't see it really being widely used as it is not really smaller than a laptop and doesn;t really do anything a laptop cannot do.

A Kindle costs $250 and has a battery life of two weeks (vs. $500 & up and ten hours for the iPad). Plus, it's much easier to read on a Kindle than on a backlit display. Not to knock the iPad since it will have its place, but the Kindle is superior as a book reader.

Lousy display on most netbooks though. A small IPS panel is very attractive. Not all that interested in the 3G version. Looking at the $700 64gb version.

There is already an apps that does this on the iphone/ipod touch. Just need to make the screen output larger. It's a DSLR Camera remote SW. Pretty cool thing. The screen on an iphone is just a bit too small though.

it's Apple, it's a mobile platform, and it has no open-ness in terms of customization. The only hope is that someone gets real OS X, Linux, or Windows running on it :)
Otherwise, it's just another stupid toy to cart around with you. I love my 3G (iPhone...) but I know that it is not going to be 10 times better just because it is 3 times bigger. $250 netbook can do almost anything you guys want, but rendering HDRs from 6 raw exposures will make your eyes bleed - and your battery cry.

For the new Canon evolutionary DSLR, a new AI SW to automatically suggest framing/exposure change according to your style. The AI SW will take 100 of your favorite photos and come up with a style.
Even better, the AI SW can suggest the change in a slightly abusing manner.

Is there anything besides taking pictures (and now videos) a camera is supposed to do? Nope. So most of the time, it is going to be evolutionary. However we now have usable ISO12800, and even ISO25600. A few years ago I remember maxing out at ISO1600. I would call that revolutionary in some respect.

You can take a picture using a light-proof milk jug, a piece of film taped to the bottom of the inside and a tiny hole drilled in the cap - but it's not a very good picture!

Maybe Canon will make a cellular based WAN connection in the camera. So you can immediately post to POTN the picture you just took, even before you've looked at it.
I guess even that isn't revolutionary these days with point and shoots able to upload directly to facebook/photobucket/flickr/etc from the camera via Wi-Fi.
Ooo ooo, I know.
I would like my camera to be able to feed me while I look though the view finder. You know, maybe it could just push some bacon into my mouth while I frame up a shot.

do compare apples. You cannot compare the eink display to an lcd display - they just don't compete. The lcd display can play videos, will be cheaper for the same resolution, will be color, etc.
An eink display is expensive, the bigger the more expensive. But it is absolutely perfect for reading books on. I know this because I have a sony prs-300, and the eink display on it is just like reading paper.
As an ebook reader anything with an eink display wins hands down. Soon the price of the displays and thus the readers will drop, but until then 9" are expensive. As anything else, even a $300 netbook beats an ebook reader - because they aren't meant to be that.
Its like comparing food processors to potato peelers - they don't do the same thing at all.

Yeah, you could choose whether you want "normal" mode where you could expose properly for actual night shots or "night" mode where you can take photos that would look like they were taken on a bright and sunny day with little to no light at all.

Apple is NOT innovative honestly.
With my SONY Clie handhelds, I listened to music, did all the daily organizing, watched video clips saved on MS sticks, browsed internet by connecting to wifi, read document including PDF, checked stocks, streamed the internet FM and watched TV program around the world, took pictures with the 2.0 mp cameras with flash, played games, remote controlled my SONY TV, sound system as in year 1999 .
I could use it's on screen keyboard, handwriting, or the built in keyboard for data entering there. And of course I downloaded many games and apps from it's app store online. I really don't see apple's ideas are that innovative. And the operation system was from Palm. I think Palm was the real innovative, life changing company here.
And then window based smart phones took over the jobs from my clies in year 2003 (i believe) and I was happy with them as well because it intergrated my cell phone with my super PDA (clie) and full time wireless internet access ( no longer limited to wifi connection). Amazing. I would also call that innovative.
Tablet from apple is good but the window based tablets have been around for quite a while already. Many of people have been used tablets daily. I was one of them. I am not a fan for SONY or Microsoft. Just want to point out that Apple,s technology is just not as innovative in my eyes. Their commercial and marketing people have done some great jobs though.

All Kindles come with 3G wireless support. I think Apple charges extra for that option. :) Anyhow, when you travel a lot, a ten hour battery life is limited at best, and back-lit displays are hard on the eyes.
10 hour battery kinda sucks, agreed. Back lit LCD are hard on eyes... maybe... but I use to work in front of a lcd my own working day so maybe I am desensitized =P
Again, the iPad does allow for inverting black and white to make some text easier on your eyes.
I ended up buying Gunnar computer glasses. They work marginally, the longer you work in front of a computer, the more you notice the difference =)

Compare apples to apples please (no pun intended). The 9.7" Kindle costs a lot. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015TG12Q/ref=s9_simi_gw_p349_t1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=068XRASE7P3RFAC19HQ2&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846
$489 is damn close to $499 to me =)
Plus who cares if it is back lit? Just invert the colors so fonts are white and the rest is black.
The Kindle may be a better book reader, but it is a worse everything else, lol.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
But the Kindle is a book reader, it is not trying to be all things to all men... I can sit and read the thing for hours, the thought of reading on a backlit LED screen even with the colours inverted would drive me bonkers.
I am sure that the Ipap will have the folk with apple tinted specs bouncing off the walls but it certainly is not a technological revoution in any sense, it could end up being a revolution in how technology is accepted and used but that is for the market place to decide.

No offence but all I want a DSLR to do is take the photos with interchangeable lenses and give me the control I currently have. There is nothing else I would rather have/need to be able to continue.
Things that people never saw before were things like live view and video. People will be wary of it at first but people slowly come around to the idea.
I can see anything else that they could add that people really require. Possibly wifi built ini but I cant see many people using it etc.

Apparently (with an adaptor) you can take photos and directly put them into the iPad. How well that works in practice I have no idea.
You can get photos off SD cards too... sorta sucks for us CF card users...
Still, I loved my ipod touch (till it was stolen/lost) and I LOVE my iphone. The biggest criticism I could give to the ipod touch is that it was too small for videos and ebooks). iPad changes that.

It costs about as much as a Kindle and does way more than what a Kindle does.
I'm by no means a Kindle fan, but after having an extensive play with one, you can at least say that the Kindle is a focused piece of technology optimised for a single task - reading electronic text.
Not quite sure what the iPad is trying to offer. Unless they have some very killer apps up their sleeve for this thing (a distinct possibility...), it looks to me to be the lamest product that Apple will have released for several years.

Ever heard of the Apple TV? That was the lamest. This improves upon a great product with a good software base (app store) the iPhone/iPod Touch.
Kindle reads books... yep... it does it well... doesn't really do much else.
iPad can surf the web, read many different document types, play games, and has lots of useful apps. I know the "there's an app for that" commercials are corny, but it is pretty much true. A 9.7" IPS screen? Thank you Apple, great for showing off my work! =)

And that was my point about the Kindle. It's focused.
Does the iPad really improve on a great product? The reason that the iPhone and iPod are so brilliant is that they fit in your pocket and nothing else that's about comes close to their usability and functionality.
"...surf the web, read many different document types, play games, and has lots of useful apps... 9.7" IPS screen" - this sounds like any other netbook out there - many of which offer more powerful processors, larger screen and a keyboard in a package that aint much bigger.
I just wonder whether the size of this thing will inhibit the 'cool factor' that most recent Apple products have been imbued with....

Me thinks you don't know anyone who owns a iPod touch or iPhone, the iPad (as does the iPod Touch and iPhone) reads PDF's. Natively it is mediocre, but there are apps (quite a few of them free) that improve pdf reading and organization.
On the contrary, I used to own an iPod Touch and I own an iPhone. I know about the email attachment and jail breaking.
What I wanted was a reader that can read PDF files natively without any of that. In the Kindle DX I have that. I just drag and drop PDF's and I can read it as it was intended to. I didn't buy the smaller Kindle because PDF's don't translate well, especially when the PDF have graphics with text wrapping, etc.
Now if the iPad can read PDF's without the hassle, then sure, I would be very interested b/c all else equal it doesn't take a genius to realize the iPad is the more attractive unit.
But this is specific to me. Of course not everybody is looking for a PDF/Doc reader. I needed something that can read PDF, and do it well.

This is OT (for the forum more than the post) but the iPad looks terrible honestly. This is what Apple should have made: http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook
The iPad is underpowered and unable to multitask. It's an expensive digital picture frame and short-battery life e-reader. If I'm going to carry around something that big, it better be more powerful and productive than my iPhone. It's not even a great web browsing device because lack of flash support.
I'm pretty disappointed with Apple. I own thousands of dollars worth of Apple equipment. This will not be one of them.

If you think about it, Apple only created 2 industry changing devices: iPod and iPhone. And only iPhone I considered life changing, and that is in US/North American life. We will have to wait and see what iPad will become.
To me, I rather Canon stay pratical, make camera that produce good pictures, instead of making "life style", but not so pratical devices.

Some people consider the Apple II pretty "industry changing", at least for those that have personal computers ;). The PowerBook was pretty important too, as I believe it was the first "laptop" PC to include a keyboard and trackball.

Apple has put out some things that have really created a market, but iPod and iPhone are both items that came into existing markets. They do really well in the markets they came into, but didn't create or significantly change the technology in those markets.

The iPad is intended as netbook competitor. Netbooks are used as cheap, ultra-portable laptops for word processing, internet browsing (reading), some light games...and not much else. Apple's goal was to make something that was better than a laptop in those categories. I think they did. Is it revolutionary? I don't think so, but it's a big step in the use of touchscreen technology.
What's missing in this version is a camera, Flash support, and multitasking, though multitasking isn't as huge an issue for this category.
Anyways, I like that they put in an IPS screen. Now they just need to put them in their laptops....
I have a Kindle DX and a bunch of technical documents in PDF. Match made in heaven.
The iPad is nothing more than an enlarged iPod Touch. That said, if it can somehow read PDF's natively, then yeah, I'll buy it.
A PDF file was loaded during the presentation, so I would imagine it does. OSX also has native support for PDFs...but I dunno anything about the iPhone OS.

I don't know... the ipod and now iphone, have pretty much completely changed those markets.
They also completely changed/created the digital content market. There was practically no online music sales, video, tv, etc.. The online music portion is now bigger than Walmart in brick and mortar. That's huge.
Apple also pioneered things like Firewire, and they've taken practically dead open source projects and turned them into powerhouses. Look at WebKit for instance. They took the open source project that was KHTML and turned it into THE mobile browser solution. There is nothing else that competes with it now.

bw! Someone finally said it as i finished going through this thread what apple did to the mobile market. Look at how RIM and Google put out thier own "app stores". They didnt do this on thier own but rather because of how apple simplified and integrate the system. Thats what ive noticed with apple over the years. They wow you not on new products but rather taking whats out there and making it better. We had mp3 players but then the ipod came out. Took that idea and made it better. Yes we had phones which played MP3s, showed us pictures, and allowed us to download ring tones. Then the iphone came. Honestly, before the iphone we thought those products were great even though they were sluggish but thats all we had. The iphone took all those thing and made them better. We can complain with it being restricted but after using the iphone for two years, not a droid or blackberry, can touch the iphone in terms of how seemless everything is. We shall see what the ipad does. I never liked the kindle or nook as i always thought they should do more than just put up pages of text. The ipad should give them a run and force those companies to do better with thier products. Competition is great for everyone and we should be happy apple is out there reinventing ideas.

I know Xerox invented the GUI but Star was a commercial system I believe. That's why I said "first publically available" but I guess "first privately available" would have been more appropriate.
The Apple Lisa (developed after the Apple crew visited PARC) was the first personal computer with a GUI I believe, and that led to the Macintosh, which was the first successful PC with the "modern" interface of keyboard, mouse (also thanks to PARC), and GUI.

Yes, Apple got the basis of things like the mouse and the gui from Xerox PARC, but they took it and brought it to the masses.
Apple did similar things with countless orther stuff too, like USB. Before Apple, USB couldn't be found anywhere. You couldn't find a computer that came with it, let alone a mouse or any other peripheral that used that input. Apple saw the future and made it the ONLY option on their brand new iMac (talk about guts).
The Lisa was indeed the first product available, and I had one. My dad practically mortgaged his home and got divorced for buying this back in the day (He paid over $10,000 for it). I started my illustrious career cutting my teeth in MacPaint back in 1983.

I think the one really revolutionally thing Canon could do is offer a way to get even more lattitude of image detail from black to white; the highlight priority is very useful but if it could be done to a greater extreme with a new sensor design or building a really useful HDR into the camera would be amazing.

When will the gap and your laptop be ome narrower. I take photos with my iPhone and email them immediately without downloading them into a laptop and then transmitting them from there. This will change and the photographers load will become lighter and this may also happen in the 3/4 cameras for the news reporters, shoot while it's happening and instead of that stupid print button you'll go into the cameras menu and email the selects immediately.
Think of the worldwide connections with things like Facebook and Twitter, they are becom
ing huge and there is a ton of photography being posted there for promotional purposes. When will we be able to send full size photos to the client from the camera.
In about a week I will shoot a rehearsal for a musical that will be performed one time only and they will hope to fill 1,200 seats form a select market.
I will shoot rapidly all throughout the rehearsal, pick a handful of selects that night and post them to two different locations on Facebook before going to bed. I will also provide the promotional dept a photo they select from those postings to make a poster and then I will shoot the dress rehearsal the night before the performance and post photos that night to Facebook for a performance that's happening the next night.
Now if I was traveling and doing this it would be nice to transmit the selects right from the camera like I can with my iPhone.
I get photos regularly that are being shot from a small plane immediately after they were shot to show mw a scene, this technology is already out there, it just needs to be taken another step or two. And this totally applies to shooting video. I can totally imagine a news reporter sending video from their cell phone when suddenly they find themselves in a battle situation and the network has it on air immediately- the next step is for them to be able to do it with a better camera.

Or, the cell phones will start becoming better cameras and completely replace point and shoots and start fullfilling other new duties, but the cameras very likely will be coming from the cell phone companies not the camera manufacturers if the don't jump in within the next two years.

People say that live view will replace the viewfinder but I sure as hell hope it never does. That's a terrible idea and if Canon does it I'm going to someone with a viewfinder. I hate using live view cause it puts extra noise in the picture and besides, it's completely worthless on a sunny day.

How does it put extra noise in the picture?
It's also pretty handy at night and on cloudy days or in shade.
I don't want it to EVER replace the viewfinder either, but it's nowhere as bad as you portray it.

I can't even think of much they could do. What are some ideas you can come up with for DSLR's that have never been seen before?
Stuff that's probably decades away:
Autofocus reads your eye's vision thru the viewfinder - whatever you're looking at when the shutter opens is what it focuses on. No matter where it is in the frame. Of course, that'd just be one setting available - if you wanted to you could choose to focus in more traditional ways.
Also, much, much smarter pixels. Pixels that can each record a red, green, and blue value on their own, without having to have information read and interpolated by a color filter array.
Another thing: Camera bodies that automatically send each image you take to your home computer (via satellite or other technology not yet discovered). You snap the shot, possibly thousands of miles from where you live - within milliseconds the image file is on you computer at home. No need for memory cards, unless you want to use one anyway just for backup.
Bodies that use solar power as an alternative power source. If it's a fairly bright day, you could shoot thousands of frames without even having a battery in the camera!
All bodies and lenses completely waterproof, able to be used underwater to depths of over 300', without any need for any extra housing whatsoever. Of course, it goes without saying that all bodies and lenses would also be completely dust proof.
Video mode: When shooting video, the camera would shoot at it's full fps rate using full resolution frames! This means that every single frame in a video would be the same quality as a still shot. We could shoot video all the time, then simply select the best looking frame from within the video and use that as our still image.
Follow focus on video would be a must. In fact, it's hard to believe that they haven't already done this. I think they're intentionally holding this back just so that they can add it to later models (5Dmk3?) so that people will have to upgrade.

could those pixels detect blown highlights and lower their sensitivity?

could those pixels detect blown highlights and lower their sensitivity?
Absolutely! The sensors would be able to produce an extraordinary dynamic range (similar to today's HDR images) due to each pixel's ability to determine it's own sensitivity. This would be done automatically on a pixel-by-pixel basis, not just some system where groups of pixels worked together (that would be a form of interpolation, and interpolation always causes some degree of information loss).

I would disable the eye focus thing right away because I look through the viewfinder looking at the scene and don't want the camera to focus all over the place.
The Sigma Foveon sensor already records red, green, and blue in three layers. Too bad Canon hasn't put that in unless it's due to patent issues.
The solar power issue would be difficult because most of the time your hand is over quite a bit of the camera or you're in the shade. Battery life has risen dramatically since DSLRs came into existence.
I agree with your video suggestions.

This pixel-by-pixel thing is something I've thought about for a long time... and have kind of wondered why they aren't like that already. Film is understandable, but if each pixel were a truly independently operating unit...

I think the next logical step is removing the mirror in the SLR and using an electronic shutter. This would allow incredible shutter speeds on any size sensor. I think this would happen long before full resolution video where you could extract single images would.

They've already got that - on every point 'n' shoot camera out there. It's one reason why they're so slow and produce lots of noise.

Sooo, if Canon do an Apple, they round off any corners on a pre-existing product, put a half eaten fruit logo on it and jack up the price?
I'd rather see gradual changes rather than gimmick or "revolutionary" progress as that way we are less likely to end up with lemons/white elephants. And I certainly would hope that we don't see a triumph of PR and marketing vs usefulness with our DSLRs...
What would be nice is automatic compensation for stuck/lazy/hot pixels - but then I am lazy/time challenged when it comes to PP. Quick switch between spot focus and standard focus points. Better dynamic range. Card slot for a pocket wizard (etc) transmitter unit (in a similar vein to that used by some studio lights) thus enabling US area to use US freqs and RoW to use their freqs. Better AF in video. Faster sync speed. Live viewable remote (like the ipod app but without the PC you need to plug the camera into. Larger LCD (i.e. big enough to see properly on, so > 5" screen) that you can use for liveview which plugs into the USB/HDMI out port. Stuff like that!

I was under the impression that the noise was due to a tiny sensor. I wonder if it's possible to a mirror-less APS-C sized sensor camera? EDIT: Looks like the Samsung NX10 has an APS-C seized sensor. However, it uses the NX mount...lol.

Actually apple products are really well made (cut out of aluminum and such). Also they make their own software/OS which works very well IMHO (the iPhone interface works way better than the other 3 touchscreen phones I tried before getting one).
But lets not let facts get in the way of building that strawman. ;)

Yes, they are well made - their own software/OS isn't all that wonderful however - you have to jail break the ****** thing to get the best out of it. Prefer a windows7 phone personally.
Apple products are not that good to command the price premium they do compared to other products. It's all really a triumph of PR and Marketing.

Love mine, all the phone users running the same apps envy the display. Use it to check my emails (won't use the keyboard to type a novel, it wasn't meant to be used that way), but works fine for most email. And it is great for surfing the net, much better than a netbook for portability. Already got some very helpful photography apps and looking for more. Want to use it for live view, use live view for focussing, very valuable tool. Using my I-pad would give me more detail, and allow me to do macro work too close to the ground for me anymore (senior citizen). Do not put much into opinions from non-users, I had friends that told me computers in the home would NEVER catch on. Anyway, if anyone knows of an app to give me live view, let me know.

Well, it wouldn't be totally revolutionary, but I think it would be pretty sweet to see a version of Hasselblad's True Focus technology come to a DSLR...though I have no idea how well it actually works or how useful it would be in practice.
Btw, what's so revolutionary about a big iPod Touch?
to apple lunatics every thing with apple logo is revolutionary, they made a bigger iphone!!, hurray
canon will announce new DSLR that is 10 times bigger then current models, combined with lens you will need a forklift to cary it around.

also they would dis allow 3rd party lenses, battery contacts will be exposed, and if you hold it wrong you will get a shock, canon will tell you to hold it diffrently, just like apple did with phone.
Oh, and Canon employees will start jumping off roofs, just like Foxcoon employees are doing

apple hasn't done anything revolutionary in over a decade. their computers are more expensive than their windows counterparts but in no way faster since you can option the hell out of a windows pc and have money to burn for software and still not have enough to pay for the apple equivalent.
the ipod has become a giant gorilla in the market with itunes selling you hundreds of thousands of titles they "let you play" but never own. its many variants are as reliable as the xbox 360 product line, but apple just buries those facts like the workers at its chinese plants and lets you buy extended warranty plans at near 50% of the product cost.
apple products are expensive. once again. apple products are expensive with no clear advantage over the competition aside from the fact they look better (but that is a subjective claim). apple fanbois always talk about the latest powerbook or powerPC being faster (100X or so seems to be the claim) over some windows rig--then fail to mention that computer costs 15 grand and is only upgradeable with apple hardware.
the ipad is an overhyped kindle with a color screen. if you actually have a job and need a mobile PC a netbook or a small windows PC will let you get work done instead of this chromed POS with no DVD drive, PCIMA slots, USB ports, or even firewire (apple's legendary USB killer that transfers data at unprecedented rates assuming you have one of the four devices in the world that support this format). but if you want the many "apps" at the "app store" which can simulate a spirit level or compass but can't setup a simple VPN handshake so you can login to a secure terminal at work, you're more than welcome to work on your next "great screenplay" at starbucks along with the other kids in tight jeans and with spotty facial hair and weird piercings.
apple is fashion over form. they're the morons who prefer a sleek laptop with no "useless things" like USB ports, removable drives, user accesible batteries, etc. their products are great if you've tried nothing else, or realized that in the decades apple has been selling its users the kool-aid at a huge premim the world around has changed and moved on.
no one cares that apple invented windows, now that their version of windows sucks harder than microsoft's.
and to the iphone crazies, one word: at&t. that's right. you are so in love with those black and white suppositories, you sign a contract with the worst cell phone provider in the country. there are cell phone providers in sub-saharan africa with better reception.

Yeah, he needs to take a break and cool down a bit.
Nobody makes anyone buy that stuff. Why worry about how other people spend their money?
And here's a tip: an iPad is not a laptop nor is it a laptop replacement. Once that sinks in maybe it won't hurt so bad when you see people using an iPad. Have you ever used one? Ever used a Kindle? What exactly do they have in common? Almost nothing.
I don't own either, but have used both. I have no plans to buy either one, or the alleged iPad killers that are speculated about. They both seem like something I don't really need and wouldn't use. But I can see where other people could really put them to good use. I'm glad they exist since other people seem to enjoy them so much... but I'll hold onto my money for now.
If you don't need a tool, why buy it? Why rant about someone who does?
