OK. So I've been reading about lighting and such, still haven't received the two flashes I purchased online, but the light in the room last night was cool and my seven year old wanted to model...so I took advantage. I really want to learn, so CC and re-edits are more than welcome. I've only cropped and/or played with contrast in a Microsoft program for these, shot with my G9 and a lens/adapter kit (new and fun!). New 40D to play with coming this weekend...yay. Thanks in advance.

Hey fellow B.C. 'er

You probably noticed this, but in the first one, you have the proverbial "flaoting head" syndrome. A flash sure would have eliminated this effect. The onboard flash is harsh on her face.

The second doesn't draw me in at all. She is looking away from you, and the framing isn't pleasing.

Have fun with the new camera!

So can't WAIT for off camera flash...lol...feel like SUCH a newbie...SHE liked the shots of course, LOL, I was just playing with the lighting, but clearly have a lot to learn. Thank you for the feedback, keep it coming if you have something further I can learn from!

Even with the onboard camera, this could have worked out a tad better? Have you checked out the G9 forum here?

lighting is a big part of this type of photography and takes a lot of practice to master. Keep experimenting and have fun. If you shoot in RAW you can correct the white balance (which the other poster mentioned - the orange red look) in post processing. You can get a flash that will rotate and bounce the light off the ceiling/walls resulting in a softer lighting on your subject. And of course you can eventually go with an off camera solution. After years of 35mm photography and a few months of digital photography I'm just now starting to dive into portrait stuff. And like you I have a lot to learn. Keep posting your progress.

Thanks all. I did shoot in Raw just have not PP'd them at all yet...I promised her I would get her skin looking better (was right before bed, lol) and I can fix the balance in there I suppose...I will get better at this...and she's more than happy to "help" model. LOL.
