A button/catch that you press to release something. (The ridges are to ensure that your thumb gets some grip on what would otherwise be smooth metal.)

OK I'm back.
No to all previous guesses including: gas pipe, belt buckle, garden hose end, knob, money clip or any type of clothing accessory.
Then we have Stewart......YES it is exactly as you said, a catch on something that needs to be pressed to release something.
but...what does it release?

I've got to be away for a while so I'm awarding Stewart the victory for his accurate description without any clues.

Good one Stewart. I've never seen a whisk like that before. Maybe that's the UK version ;)Ha ha. If it is a UK version, I can assure you it's an accident. It's actually a very useful whisk because the blades are made from a sort of silicone-plastic substance, not the usual metal, which means I can use it in non-stick pans (e.g. making a roux) without scratching them. I don't think that's likely to be of value only in the UK, but I must admit I haven't examined many US cookware shops very closely...

At least, I think so. Over here a gourd would be the dried skin of some sort of squash, but I'm being charitable and assuming that where you come from it also refers to thing before it's been dried out.
This is actually the end of a butternut squash.
I think it's interesting that the crop I posted was a row of three depressions where seeds had been (above and to the right of centre in the main picture), but in the close-up they look like they are raised - which is presumably why Mom27 thought it was something containing peaches.
