OK....did a quickie this is the entire shot...got me some extension tubes!
They are about the single best investment you can make as far as photo gear goes. I just got a macro lens but still used them for better magnification.

That's twice in a week I've solved the clues (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3243194&postcount=18483) without having a scooby about the picture! I can't help thinking that, somehow, that's a form of cheating...
Anyway, this is my 250th post on SMGG. I'd love to mark it by posting a really fiendish picture, but unfortunately (a) I don't have any on me; (b) I don't have any at home; and (c) I won't get a chance to take one tonight. So it's up for grabs.

ehm I hope my wobbly english will be good enough to avoid being taken for a pedantic idiot 8-) and also sorry if I missed some part of the spirit of this game (might be the newest newb here 8-) )but are out of focus thingies or false colours (from flash for example) a good way to interpret this theme ? I am having fun out of it but would personally like "better" (if you get what I am struggling to say) pictures or else the guessing becomes a bit frustrating.

Understand your point well, and to so degree agree. Some of the people on here do not have good enough gear for close up macro work (yet). We still encourage them to post, the improve as time goes on, learning better techniques and even buying the gear needed to take these sharp and well lit photos. Sometimes hints help us guess.
I encourage you to guess away and when correct show these fine folk a good example of the posts the should be trying for, :)

Sorry for the poor quaity, I don't have a macro set-up.You don't need a macro set-up, jmwgomz. I don't have one, and I can get some half-decent images. (At least, I think they're half-decent.) Examples: 1 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=176084), 2 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=175836), 3 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=174739), 4 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=174227), 5 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=173529), 6 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=173084), 7 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=172678). I just use my cheap 18-200mm Sigma at its longest focal length and minimum focussing distance.
Looking at your gear list, you'd do best with your EF-S 17-85. It has a maximum magnification of 0.2 (f=85mm, minimum focus distance 0.35m) which means that the image on the sensor is 0.2 times its size in real life. Since the 30D sensor is about 22.5x15mm, that means the full frame will be an object about 90x60mm.
But of course you can crop. You have 3504x2336 pixels covering that 90x60mm object, so each pixel corresponds to a part of the object that's 0.026mm across. Pretty small! If you take a 600x400 pixel crop, as I do, you'd be looking at a part of the object that's 15x10mm. Or if the quality of a 100% crop isn't too good, you could take a portion of the image that's say 900x600 pixels and shrink it to 600x400. That will improve the quality and it's still a part of the object that's only 22x15mm. Plenty good enough for SMGG.
I hope this wasn't all painfully obvious to you.
