Still don't know what it is, but I thought I would point out that it isn't three pieces of leather, it is two - one rough edged piece doubled back over a smooth edged piece.
That make it seem like the reinforced edge of something, but it has to be something that grants an end view.
It is an old-school leather camera case?

Nope, it is actually brand new, a part of something I bought for using canoeing and camping.

Thanky kindly :azphotos beaming: That really looks sweet, first class and the little guard is valuable because that is where you can fubar the handle pretty quickly! No fun breaking the head off the axe when a few day up in the boundary waters!

Will get something fun up within the time frame indicated earlier!

Howdy - Hope this one will be fun for you :D Full frame at 3x.OK, for the benefit of myself and others, 3x means that your 22.5mm x 15mm sensor is filled by an object which is 7.5mm x 5mm. So those two horizontal edges are about 1.5mm apart and the three "big" white blobs are actually only about 0.25mm across!

But I have no idea what it is.

BearLeeAlive

Well, the lower piece looks like cut fiberglass, though it would have to be real thing at that magnification.

I will guess a crash helmet

azphotos
13th of August 2007 (Mon), 10:26
Thank you Stewart - actually it is 3x on a 30d sensor, 1.6 factor - it is the "full frame", not a crop. Sorry if this misled. So it is smaller possibly by a significant factor.

It is not a tile floor.

It is not a crash helmet and it is not fiberglass. The top portion and the bottom portion are the same material.

Hint: Due to the magnification, the depth of field is shallow. That will explain why a portion is out of focus.

Hint: This may be too big of a hint, - - understand the white - understand the object.

Sorry if this misled. So it is smaller possibly by a significant factor. Now I am confused.

Normally, in macro terminology, the magnification factor is the size of the image formed on the sensor divided by the size of the real object. So for example my Sigma 18-200mm zoom has a maximum magnification of 1:4.4. The sensor on my 350D - like your 30D - is roughly 22.5x15mm, so that means the smallest object which will fill the frame is roughly 99x66mm. (22.5*4.4=99 etc.)

Conversely a dedicated macro lens like the Canon MP-E 65mm is rated at 1-5x. So at its maximum magnification the sensor is filled by an object which is only 4.5x3mm. (22.5/5=4.5 etc.)

So "3x" should mean that the image on the sensor is 3 times life size, i.e. the full frame represents an object 7.5x5mm. However, if that's not what you mean, then what do you mean by "3x"?

azphotos

No, not an astronomical object -

Right Stewart - it was taken at 3x rating of the 65mm - on the 30d not the 5d - I did not do the math, nor have I done the math - I just felt that full frame could be confused as on the 5d compared to a less than full frame on 30d.

Give me a few and I will put up a 1:1 Thought the white would be a dead give away.

It will be in a duffel bag with misc stuff including my tripod and monopod. I actually use added flotation with this bag. All my other bags/barrels are waterproof and float on their own. I do not tie it to the canoe as if I should go over (though I never have on flat water), I don't want it sinking my canoe. :)

Their carving axe is one of their best. I have a friend who does post & beam construction who has one and just loves it. It holds a sharp edge for a long time for him. He also has the Forest Axe (amongst more than a dozen or so axes, adzes and large knives). As axes go they are not cheap, as a fine tool goes they are very affordable. Once you have one it last a lifetime with lots of use.

SingingSabre

Almost missed this one. :)
And, it is close enough.

It is the outside of a prime rib roast. The shot taken on the right side of this slab. It was very, very yummy.

There is a very, very similar shot of straws in Bryan Peterson's revised Learning to See Creatively. Awesome book.
