I think it was Johnny Carson that did a skit about Canon's new "talking camera". He said the camera would let you know if the light was right. The voice would say "too dahk, use frash" :D Good advice for macro shooters. It's the best advice that I received from this forum so I am passing it on. Us a good flash and your macro shooting will come to life.

Mikelangelo

Yeah... don't have a nice flash, yet. Don't have any fancy lights, either. I figured a tripod, cable release and a long shutter speed would work... live and learn. Thanks for the tip.

Not a viewfinder.

This hint won't help, I don't think (well..maybe)...but it's rated for use by the Navy Seals and I think other branches of the military as well. I hope that doesn't give it away.

Rumjungle

I don't know if it's the key, but you always need the proper amount of light. For stationary objects, you don't really need the flash as you can just slow the shutter.

Here's an example. I just turned off all the lights in the room and shot this. The only light source is a bit of light reflecting off a wall so it's pretty dark (too dark to read). Shutter was set to 25 seconds:

That's an excellent example of using available light.

My macro photography improved greatly when I started using a diffused flash (due to a recomendation from this forum). My 540EZ has a built in diffuser so that makes it simple. It's mostly a DOF thing and motion blur thing. If the object is inanimate you can get away with long exposure, to a limit (reciprocity failure). It just occured to me that I don't know how much reciprocity failure plays into digital imagery. I know it's an issue with film and I suspect that it's an issue with digital imagery. If your subject is alive, animate, or you are handholding using a flash will probably help with sharpness. In fact, from my limited experience in macro, I know it will.

I don't know if it's the key, but you always need the proper amount of light. For stationary objects, you don't really need the flash as you can just slow the shutter.

not a vent or a filing cabinet....
not a stack of anything either

you would be more likely to hear this than see it....

I figured it would be easy for anyone who has actually seen one.

As soon as I saw it I knew what it was but the answer had been given already. I just had one in my hand yesterday lending it out to my bro to do some network cabling.

I don't think it is too picky, the winner is determined by the poster of the pic. Sometimes when things are easy it is best to get picky a bit.

candles arn't made from beeswax :) so i don't think it was being too picky

Just curious does that grill serve a purpose or is it just for looks?

chemicalbro

well the little speaker it covers is a tweeter........... (for high pitched/frequency sounds... for instance a cymbal) the grill diffuses those sounds and kinda bounces it off of the floor so they don't sound so tinny

Cleo199

It's okay to be picky even though candles can be made of bee's wax (sheets you roll and use a blow dryer to heat the roll tight....) but that's okay. I'll be dead on with one of them. I just have a picture I want to put here to see if anyone can figure it out... I'll keep trying.... :)

Hey guys, less natter and more photos!

I have a suggestion - it's almost 24 hours since R Hardman guessed right - he hasn't posted since and is offline. I think someone else should post a new pic. Anyone agree?
