Well that was interesting timing.
Posts have been removed and I apologize to the group since neither of those posts were constructive in any way.
I also apologise if my butting in was seen as rude but I did get some support for it. I think we should all accept that it is a just a game and its momentum needs to be kept up if it is to remain healthy. IMHO a few hours is OK, after a day's absence no-one should complain if we just carry on. Perhaps we should have a poll about this issue? I could do a seperate thread?
An Olympus camera
CORRECT! :)

One of my two 30 year old Olympus SLRs to be precise. Definitely not a P&S, Athena! And it is a bit grubby when seen in macro, isn't it, Mikelangelo!

Forget the poll, There should be a standing rule. You'll have 12 hours to post an image or forfit your turn.. How that?
Thanks for the input. I'm not sure that everyone would agree that 12 hours is the best time period.
How about I do a new thread with a poll? It will suggest that we institute jr#8's standing rule with a limit of 4, 8, 12 or 24 hours and get people to vote which time period they think is right. I would also include the option 'no time limit, we must just wait for the winner to post'. I would let the thread run for (say) 10 days with frequent (every day or so) pointers to it from this thread. At the end of the 10 days we inform Big-B (the moderator who started this great thread) of the result and ask him to edit the first post to include the rule.
Any objections? :)

Ok, I am thinking some folk here could use some counciling from SMGGA (Super Macro Guessing Game Anonymous). I understand that this disease is an addiction and that it is hard to control. Rather than setting rules to this game, we should first be more proactive and first set up a support team for those here who are suffering from SMGG addiction. This is not to be taken lightly, it affects even the best people from around the globe, it takes time away from loved ones, causes stress and anxiety and makes normally nice folk a bit grumpy when suffering from the withdrawls caused by a lack of quessing material.
I have followed this thread from day one and even posted on that day. Little did we know then the monster we were creating. Even I have fallen victim to this problem, drawn in by the sheer excitment of winning and frustrated when I did not recieve a constant fix. I have now learned not to get too caught up in it, try to accept that some people have other lives and try to maintain a more normal life for myself. My family has helped and supported my healing of this addiction, understanding it has not been easy for me to let go but glad to have their father/husband back again.
With help and some commitment on your part, you too can beat the SMMG disease.
Mike Bell
11th of April 2006 (Tue), 09:23
Oh Jim, I had no idea of your suffering!
Those who know me know I am a bit of an organiser. I like rules - but only if they are democratically agreed and they help. I think this rule could help. There has been a bit of irritation expressed in the past that we could have avoided if there was clarity.
But I do appreciate that it is really just a bit of fun to take or leave as you wish! :)

I dunno about the multiple guesses rule. If you figure out something that identifies a brand but the object isn't obvious why should everyone else be able to make guesses based on your original idea. That's the problme I see.
And how exactly does one come up with the guess of a toy surfboard? I never would have even come close to this.

Not a Christmas decoration and I have completely run out of macro views of glasses, Mike6158!

1. This is super macro (can't you tell by the appalling quality?) - the FOV of this crop is about 2.5mm x 2.5mm.
2. You put this inside something else.

This could be a micro-adjustment part of a gizmo, but what has me stumped is why the outer surface is so highly polished, and why I am not seeing enough pitch to make me think this is a worm-screw shaft.
Rarely will you ever see such a perfect surface in macroland, and what's up with those shiny bits?
I have zero clue, but I'll toss out it is a feed roller for paper or cloth.

lol... unfortunately no to all the above. Finally looks like I'ver stumped you guys!
By the way Qtrmeg, I had admitted that what is visible is in fact a worm/grub screw earlier. I think the lack of pitch on the thread is just due to the angle of the shot.
The shiny surface, well maybe that's a clue to it's application...
I'll give you something a little more helpful though - the action is applied by hand not by motor.
That should narrow the field considerably.

Is this something you wind up?
Or is this for adjustment?

Is this one of those ice cream scoops?
If I'm right you knwo what I mean. If not then well I'm wrong.

errrrmmm... I refuse to answer that on the grounds it may solve the puzzle. Have a few guesses and I'll consider another clue later...
not an ice-cream scoop.

Not an ice cream scoop... how about a can opener... either that or the arming device for a nuclear weapon

A worm gear was guessed. The picture is of a worm gear. What else is there to guess without a clue or a macro of a different part of the object.

I agree. It seems the desire to stump us has made him post an object that is unidentifiable with the current image.

LOL... I meant it would make it too easy. I think anyway.
Come on people... where do you find clean open-to-view gearing like this?
Note that the gears are metal not plastic, so they are designed to take some considerable pressure.
And since you are giving up so easy, it is used to adjust tension in....

It sounded like it was going to be an easy one for a while. Tune your attention to the clues. I don't want to string you guys along for much longer.

It's the thing that you use to tune strings on a guitar! (or other stringed instrument)

Ah of course. You know I was just playing around with a guitar a couple of hours ago. Then I come and sit here hopelessly trying to work out how the clues of 'tune' and 'string' could possibly go together. I'm just too tired ... zzzz ... zzzz ...

Good pick Mike!! Looks like Nick C picked up on my subliminal clues too. Actual term is machine-head (at least for electrics anyway). This one is off one of my bass guitars. Not much to it really is there?
I like your new avatar by the way. Fire away...
