As for the pic I'm going to say money (I don't know why, it was the first thing that jumped into my head). But the figures in the speckly bits are confusing me. They look like they're sitting above the rest of the picture.

I was wondering where this came from.

cataclysmcow, I see this was your first post. Welcome.

You should check out the procedures (though there are no official ones) as to how things work here. Basically it goes that whoever identifies an image must then post one of their own. The only time this differs is when someone guesses correct and does not have another image ready to post or does not have the time to take one they then pass it off to someone else. Maybe you could delete your pic and save it to post later, it does look interesting.

Welcome to the fun.

I guess my excitement just got the best of me. I've been lurking these forums for a few weeks and just love the content. I remember telling myself, "ok, last one was concluded so I can post", but looking back on it I have no idea how I came up with notion. I love POTN and hope to be able to contribute in some way.

To be fair though I think AirBrontosaurus should give some more hints. At least a clue to the ratio. A good pic nonetheless. Maybe a hint in the form of a PM to me so I can post my macros ...

AirBrontosaurus
11th of July 2006 (Tue), 16:51
But seriously....I have a question...everyone is interested in ratios...what exactly does that mean and how would that help to guess???

The ratio (such as 1:1 or 1:2) is the ratio of size between the object and the sensor. For example, the sensor on my 300D is 22.7mm across. Thus, at a 1:1 ratio, a bug that is 22.7mm long would stretch across the entire sensor and, subsequently, the image.

At 1:1, 1mm = 1mm, 1cm = 1cm, etc. True macro is something taken at 1:1.

The ratio is important because it can give a sense of scale. "Can" is italicized because you need to know a few other things first, such as cropping and resizing. However, if someone posted a 600x400 pixel, 100% crop of a 1:1 image taken on a 300D (whew), you could figure out how large the item is in real life which will help you in your guesses.

Since the max resolution on a 300D is roughly 3000x2000 pxls, then you can see that the picture takes up 1/5 of the length and height of the sensor. So the object you are looking at is 1/5 as tall and 1/5 as long as the sensor. Since the 300D's sensor is 22.7mm long and 15.1mm tall, you can deduce that the object you're looking at is about 4.54mm long and 3.02mm tall.

Or, you can just use it as a general scale. It's up to you ;).

For instance, if you're looking at something that is taken at 5:1, you're guesses should be different (smaller) than if it was taken at 1:1.

I hope this helps.

PS. It wasn't exactly a hole... it was more like a sleeve. Does that count?

Thompsunshine
11th of July 2006 (Tue), 17:07
Thanks for the explanation. I think that it is going to take me a while for it to sink in though. I would imagine that actually taking a few pics would help me sort through the mathmatics of it all, don't cha think?

You, my dear, are starting to show the first symptoms of SMGG Syndrome. Be cautious as this is very addicting, it can take you away from family and friends, cause you to lose sleep and various other negative effects.

Ok guys...what in the blue blazes ia a "recreational GPS" ?????

I think he's referring to one of those Garmin or TomTom dealies. My mom has a Garmin for running. It connects itself to one of the GPS (global positioning system) satellites and then tells her how far she ran, how fast, the course she took, etc. The TomToms you put in your car and they can give you directions based on your position and show you maps and stuff. They're pretty slick, if you ask me.

AirBronto answered this pretty well, I'll post a pic when I get home, but the model is the eTrex Legend C:

The one pictured in the URL above is the Legend Cx, they're identical, but the Cx takes a microSD card.

More on the Cx (http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexLegendcx/)

In fact, I have been wondering Mike Bell has not committed himself into a care facility as he has not shown that hairy mug around here for a few days.

"Hairy mug!!!!!" Look who's talking! You're no oil paintin' yerself, Bearly my friend! :p :) ;)

Sadly I am committed to not 'into' the local care facility. The local hospital where I work has been busy lately - we got a lot of admissions from the 'T in the Park' rock festival just south of here last weekend.

I wish work didn't get in the way of important stuff like SMGG!

Talking of which - where's the next pic, CitizenSmith?

My avatar pic was taken just after finding a cache.

I've been doing Geocaching for a while as well. Not got the color version of that GPS though. :) OK, new shot will be along shortly.

How obscure do these things get? Does it need to be a household object. I've got a (probably easy) every day object and a somewhat obscure thing. Which would you guys like?

ah what the hell, I'll see how many seconds it takes someone to get the easy one. The obscure one I'll save.

Nope, it isn't anything hosey or cabley.

Off home, I'll post a clue later.

The fact that I was at work when I took the photo isn't a clue.

Your three guess have been dropping right around it like white pegs around that little 2-hole boat in battleships. Combine them all and you get.....
