The Clever Italian Mathematician
An recent Italian immigrant to New York wanted a job, but the foreman won't hire him until he passes a little math test.
"Here's your first question," the foreman said. "Without using numbers, represent the number 9."
"Without numbers?" the Italian says, "Dat is easy." And he proceeds to draw three trees.
"What's this?" the boss asks.
"Ave you got no brain? Tree and tree and tree make nine," says the Italian.
"Fair enough," says the boss. "Here's your second question. Use the same rules, but thi s time the number is 99."
The Italian stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that he has ust drawn and makes a smudge on each tree. "Ere you go."
The boss scratches his head and says, "How on earth do you get that to represent 99?"
"Each of da trees is dirty now. So, it's dirty tree, and dirty tree, and dirty tree. Dat is 99."
"All right, last question. Same rules again, but represent the number 100."
The Italian man stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture again and makes a little mark at the base of each tree and says, "Ere you go. One hundred."
The boss looks at the attempt. "You must be nuts if you think that represents a hundred!"
(You're going to love this one!!!)
The Italian leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each tree and says, "A little dog came along and crap by each tree. So now you got dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and a turd, dat make one hundred. So, when I start?"

Sunflower seeds (spits as they are more commonly known) should always be eaten with the shells on (IMHO). You do not eat the shell but spit it out. Typically, when I eat spits, I throw a dozen or so in my mouth, hold them in a cheek, and one by one roll them out onto my teeth with my tounge, split them, eat the yummy part and spit the shell out. Repeat until gone. No hands needed, you can enjoy them as you carry on whatever activity you are doing. They sure were a handy substitute for cigarettes when I quit smoking 19 years ago.
Eating shelled seeds around here is almost blasphemous.;)

:D
No, its very much of this world. An ordinary, everyday object - very middle-of-the-road.

It's one of those rubber things buried in the middle of the road with reflectors in it. In the UK they are known as cats-eyes.
I saw a TV program about their inventor once - he was English I think. He had a room with several TVs always on and tuned to each of the channels - so he didn't miss anything! I thought that was quite sad.

Spot on !
To be honest it had seen better days - I found it in the middle of a field in the Peak District - miles from any roads . . . . The "eyes" ( small mirrored lenses ) were nowhere to be found . . . .

What was his name? Out here we call those Bott's Dots. I was told it's because the inventor's name was Bott. I was wondering if that's true.

So it couldn't see - that's why it was in the middle of a field - it had got lost.:(

Apparently ours are different, and they were named for the inventor, Dr. Elbert Dysart Botts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bott%27s_dots

I see what you mean. These are called road studs over here and are almost exclusively used now to separate lanes of traffic and mark out the middle of the road, but the one in Steve's post was the original (and best - unless you were a cyclist!);)

Our cat's eyes are a remarkable piece of hardware. When a vehicle runs over them they squash down into their metal housing, where a well placed strip of rubber wipes across the lenses, cleaning them . . . . .

Thanks for showing off that nice bit of "British Inventing at its Best", Steve! The links were interesting - now I know about Bott's Dots too!
