I do both photography and cinematography with dslr cameras. I've just bought a Manfrotto 190cxpro4 and plan to take advantage of the Q90 system so I can pan videos in the horizontal position by sliding the center column.

Now, all I have left is to pick the right tripod head to suit my need. I need a head that is capable of shooting stills and video. Something that will support portrait shots & smooth panning. I'm debating between a pan/tilt head vs. ball head. I know a pan/tilt includes the handle, but will a ball head do the job just as good?

Here is what I'm looking at. Any recommendations?

How about a ball head that allows for panning?

A dampened (fluid) video head is your best bet. Which one.... I don't have a clue.

All the guys (pros) I have seen with 5DII's at events, shooting video, with 5D's have been using steadycams.

That is more than enough load capacity and a bit expensive. The most I would possibly carry is a 580EX II speedlite, L series standard zoom lens along with the T1i. I decided to go with the 391RC2. Got it from Adorama which included the 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate. Hopefully, it'll satisfy my needs.

I have Manfrotto's entry-level fluid head and it works great.

701hdv? How does that work for still photos?

I try to avoid using it for stills - I'm a ball head guy myself. The long stem of the fluid head can get in the way, but not too bad if you're not tracking something.

I use this head quite a bit and I love it for video and HATE!!!!! it for stills. IT is an absolute pain in the butt if you shoot ever try to shoot in portrait rotation. You basically can't do it.
