I've never seen gaffer's tape locally, but then again, I was never looking for it. Markertek (http://www.markertek.com) has it in various widths.

does home depot etc have it? Probably not. Gaffer tape is not the same as duct tape.

I have not shopped for tape at Home Depot, but a hardware chain in the SF Bay area, OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware) does carry real gaffer tape! So the hardware store is worth looking at, just in case it does have it.

Oh yeah? Interesting!

What department carries it? I've never seen it in my local OSH.

My OSH (Foster City) has it at the end of an aisle, not with the other tape types! And, as I recall, I have seen it in another store as well.

Real gaffer tape is so much more expensive than duct tape that I'd only expect that specialty stores would carry it.

I forget the exact price, but about $20 per roll would be what I recall, for 3M 6910 tape...real gaffer tape.

Try a music store. My local Guitar Center sells gaffer tape and a quick Google search shows a GC in Seattle -- http://gc.guitarcenter.com/locations/

Just was at the Foster City OSH today, there is a 3M tape rack at the end of the section with gaffer tape and duct tape, located between plumbing and electrical sections at an aisle running parallel to the back wall, but not next to the wall...$21.99 per roll.

Is gaffer tape the same thing as electrical tape?

Gaffer tape is cloth, no electrical tape that I have ever seen has been anything but vinyl tape, which does not tear like cloth.

Absolutely not. Gaffer tape is basically duct tape that is a nice non-reflective matte black and uses a type of glue that doesn't leave a residue when you remove it.

Geez. Kids these days.

Vinyl electrical tape came into common usage about 50 years ago, I guess. Before that we used friction tape - cloth impregnated with a tar-like substance. It was messy. If the splice needed to be waterproof we used stretchy rubber tape with adhesive on one side over the friction tape.

Y'know the next thing you'll do is mention the invention of panchromatic film! ;)

Check online first.

I just checked (need a spare roll for this weekend) and the GC on my way home only has the most expensive (super wide) roll in stock.

Bummer, guess I have to find time to go to Calumet.

If one is going to use a good bit f it over time, this looks to be a good deal.

Get a band saw, cut it in half and now you have two rolls ;)

There is a camera shop in Houston that I have bought gaffer tape and ordered it from B&H Photo. It is expensive, but has a lot of uses because when removed, it doesn't leave a sticky residue. The tape is used by professional gaffers! :-) who set up video and soundstage for concerts, etc. The tape sticks well.

I have used strips to help hold the lens hood on my Sigma 120-300 f/2.8. Sometimes it will loosed up. The tape prevents that and doesn't hurt the finish of the lens or hood. Also used it when I manually focus a lens and don't want it to change (remote camera).

Too bad even the cheapest band saw makes this a bad deal.

If you want to go the online route, try www.surplustape.com. I have ordered from them before and been very pleased with their service. They have gaffers tape in various colors and qualities from $3.00 to $16.00 per roll. I bought some of the cheap stuff, and it has worked well with no residue. However, the 3" wide stuff is a bear to pull off the roll.

You might also take a look at their companion site www.tapebrothers.com. They have kinds of tape that I didn't even know existed. If it's sticky and comes in a roll, they probably have it.

Just for everyone's benefit, I feel I should point out here that one guy's duct tape is another roadie's roll of rubbish.

If you want to get the stuff that the pros use, look for Nashua brand tape. I've seen *lots* of different brands, and if you're lucky you might find one that comes close, but none that are as good. And you wouldn't have to be too unlucky to find a roll of cloth tape that just isn't worth using at all.
