I have an S230 and was wondering how does exposure compensation mode change the settings of the camera.
I have experimented and noticed that the effect of exposure compensation is similar to changing the shutter speed, but have no idea what's happening inside the camera.

You just answered your own question,
Changing the compensation will either shorten or lenthen the shutter time or open or close the apeture.
Or even some times it will change the ISO higher or lower.

No not really, if you adjust for exposure compensation you will either be telling the camera to let more light into the frame or less. When you adjust the shutter speed (assuming you are NOT shooting in Manual Mode and if you were shooting in Manual then you shouldn't be shooting in Manual or you shouldn't be having to ask the question) the camera will allow THE SAME amount of light into the frame by adjusting the ISO, Aperture or both.

I shoot 90% of the time in AV mode so I get a consistant depth of field and in bright conditions the camera won't choose something stupid like f/16 and cause defraction so when I use exposure comp it will change the shutter speed only. (If in auto iso and light is dim then it will change the iso to compensate exposure)

I haven't seen a Compact Canon that goes slower than F8 in the past 4 years, F16? Must be a model I haven't seen. For Kap. just keep experimenting (and read your manual) a great book for Photography is : The New Manual of Photography by John Hedgecoe
