Step-by-step process from camera to final product

Firstly, I swear to the powers that be that I've searched thoroughly here but just couldn't find it so here I am. Second, I'm not asking you all to really post everything in your workflow here. Just a faint idea of how to do this is what I am asking you for.

What do you guys do with your videos after you shoot them? Of course the first thing is to download it to your PC. Then what? Do you open it in Vegas and edit there? Do I need transcoding whatever that means? I'm using 7D and shooting FULL HD 1080p @ 24p videos. I wanna delve myself into this stuff but don't know where to start and how to start it. Please help.

Nice question ! Let's hear from other members. I may actually switch on the video on my 5D2. But we need to hear about users complete (and successful) process flow only, I think.

when i goof of with video from my camcorder, i bring it into iMovie and mess with it there, i would think that the iPhoto would support this like they do with P&S cameras?

But if your not using apple i'm lost sorry.

this is why i use apple aperture instead of lightroom, because with the apple suite it makes it easier to move things around without exporting then re-importing. At some point apple will come through with aperture, but as of now lightroom is a superior product.

I can only give you an apple workflow.

I shoot my video whatever it may be. I then import it onto my computer where i Immediately back it up to another drive. Then I take the video into final cut pro and start editing my project, after editing I export a high quality video and after that I run the video through compressor for upload to vimeo.

In addition to this work flow there is one other step that can be taken before editing that would be less computer intensive during the editing process and that is to convert the H.264 video file to apple pro res files.

For a pc work flow I would just import into computer and then edit or keep the files until your ready to edit them.

Just use AVCHD intra ( MPEG2 ) instead of the P2 format. It's not interlaced, and it won't show a single issue at the same bitrate as the original working files.

I edit with the files straight from the camera. This isn't recommended as h.264 is not a good codec for editing, but my computer is a beast so I can play back real time.
The link above is for the 5dmkii which doesn't do 24p so my premiere setting is AVCHD 1080/24p.
But you will probably need to convert them to what others mentioned, drag them into your editor, edit and export.
