Hi guys my name is Hoss and I am a complete begginner in the photgraphy world....Just a few months ago I decided to step into the world of photography.I race motocross alot and decided to start taking pict of friends at the track...I purchased a olympus E10 for my first digital camera.A friend that I was in the marine corps with praised his.He just shoots still stuff like nature and some weddings...anyways me knowing nothing about photography I purchased one...I have the camera,a gripper battery supply, couple big cards a 2x zoom lens...I take about 300 pict a day on the weekends when i go....Some come out outstanding and some look like a pos.I have done some research and found that the camera at 1/640 shutter is absolutley too slow for what I am doing....
So this is what brings me here to all you pro's.Call me stupid fellas but I am going for a 1D no matter if I am a begginner or not....The reason for this immediate and huge leap is that I built a website..www.gravityshot.com and I have taken over as my racing clubs main photographer.I want to give the best to all the racers and this I think will do just that. Its alot of money but if I am going to do this I am going to do it.
My quest to you's that have stuck around to read this is...What lens do I want??I shoot outside..sunny..gloomy foggy ect...all weather conditions pretty much....I camera shop in amityville ny says the ef 100-400 f/4.5-5.6l IS usm is a great lens for what I am doing..What do you guys think??I am also going to be doing alot of skating...bmx and surfing shots.. For the surfing I will have to hold off a bit since those 400 and 600 mm lenses run in the 7000 and up range...I would like some type of zoom something 2x or greater but don't want to lose much speed since its motocross...Any of your wise words would be greatly appreciated...Some of you guys probably think I am nuts to drop this cash on something I really dont know anything about..But I jumped on the oppurtunity and I am going to make the best out of it...Thanx guys :)
Hoss
ps. my web site will be up sometime in the next few days...You can take a look at the pict I have taken with the e10 and you can see the type of shots I am doing...
thanx again

I am no professional but I can talk a little bit about my limitted experience. I have had my D60 for several months and am having a great time with it. I got the 100-400L IS mostly for wildlife shooting. I have used it to photograph a basketball ball game for a coworker. The IS works GREAT. The only problem that I had was it focuses a little too slow for continued action. The next game I photographed, I used my 28-70L and the results were better. Unfortunatly, it doesn't sound like you can get that close to the action.

On the 2x converter, I use it mostly for bird shots. You loose 2 stops with it and I haven't gotten AF to work with it yet (I have only had it for less than a month).

Hope this helps a little.

With the D60 and 100-400 IS I doubt that you will - it's two stops out of spec for the D60 AF system (minimum max aperture f5.6, and a 100-400/2x combo is f11)
I have reasonable success with the 1.4x TC, which is one stop out of spec (f8 ), in good light and with contrasty enough subjects. I wouldn't even try to AF with the 2x.

Hoss,

IMHO, you need to be spending $ on lens and not the body. A 1D with consumer lens is not the solution. Buy a D60 or new 10D and spend the saved cash on L series glass.

Ok so I am looking at the new 10D...alot cheaper and it seems like an upgrade from the D60.....Guys would this be a good choice for action sports?? also would the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 lens fit?The lens has a stabilizer in it and I have done research and it seems most people lean towards this lens for what I am doing...thanx for any responses.

You´re definitely gonna need something faster than 3fps... like the 1D 8fps. But of course... it´s not impossible to do with the D-60/10D... you just have to anticipate the action and press the shutter button a second or 2 before.
