I am considering picking one up off of EBay for easier photo sessions as well as doing our own family photos and being able to remotely enable the shutter release and timer for the shutter release.

Before buying it though I was hoping to get some others feedback.

I would be using it on a Canon 300D.

Thanks a lot

I have it, and I also have a set of Pocket Wizards. The RC-1 is strictly line-of-sight, so you can't use it when you're behind the camera. The Pocket Wizards work from any direction and seem to have much greater range.

To me, the RC-1 was something of an expensive toy.

Hmmmm.

Maybe I should read the manual.

I have the RC-1 for my Elan IIe camera and it came in handy for those family group pictures. Unfortunately, none of my digital SLRs can make use of it.

It works with the 300D?

I hadn't heard of the Pocket Wizard until this thread. With my RC-1 in the mail, I was a bit worried. But the RC-1 was $25 and the two Pocket Wizard models I see are between $60-120. So maybe the RC-1 is okay to start with? I hope so!

I assumed that since it was IR that it would ony work from the front of the camera. Hopefully that won't be too much of a limitation. I wonder if you can rig up a mirror on your tripod to reflect the IR beam up to the sensor for using it from behind the camera. Maybe more of a mess than it's worth. I guess I'll find out. ;)

I purchased a RC-1 Remote over 10 years when i first had an EOS 100, and I am still using today with my 300D when mounted on the tripod. It can also be used to fire the camera from behind for wildlife pictures such as Birds feeding on a table, if you attach a teaspoon using Bluetack or similar on to the front of the camera in the correct position the spoon will act as a reflector and bounce the Infrared Beam back towards the remote control sensor and fire the camera.

Quadphoto.

I bought it because it was cheaper than the shutter release cable:lol: by two dollars. However it only works from the front of the camera. So, it is good for group photos but will not work good if you are looking for a cable release (Maybe you can ask your model to press the shutter, though:p)

I love your idea, quadphoto! You are well on your way to earning your degree in redneck engineering.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned here is that this remote is great for bulb exposures. Click once to open the shutter, click again to close it.

You also have the option of instant shutter activation or 2 second delay. The latter is useful for self-portraits.

I've had one for several years for my Elan IIe (now my wife's camera) and love the little critter. It lives on the neck strap of the Elan, and will move to the XT if/when we get it. I've used it for family portraits and all sorts of other things (including "hidden" shots (camera on a picnic table, 28mm lens at a company picnic)). It's a nice accessory - wish the 20D had the same capability!

I love my RC1 and I fire mine from the rear with a small mirror much like the spoon trick :P
It's awesome for group photos worth every penny In my book, what was it a huge 20bucks and it fits on the camera strap how easy is that to bring along everywhere?
