I am about to buy my first tripod and need to know if the 190cxpro4 from manfrotto would be stable enough for a gripped 7d with 70-200 f2.8is and 430 exII flash and maybe a 2x teleconverter? Or should I go with a 055cx pro3 or 055cxpro4? I dont want to get something that is not adaquate for my setup. I am going with a 498rc4 head if that matters.

Yup, it should easily be able to hold up your rig, especially with that head.

Do you really want to get the 498 with the RC4 QR system? I think the RC2 might be better suited for your needs. The RC4 is bigger in size and more suitable for medium format cameras and might be a tad too big for DSLR use, especially if you're going to be mounting the plate on the lens tripod collar.

In general, folks go with the 488rc2 head with a dslr (i know i did after a bt of research on here).

My 190CX3 is perfect for my 50D, 70-300, and flash (sigma 530 st).

I considered the 190cxpro4, but the lower leg section is a fairly tiny 11mm in diameter. with 4 section legs, each section has to slide inside the one above. When trying it out in the store and shaking it a bit, that skinny lower leg section did wiggle. I don't think the issue is the maximum weight the tripod can carry, but how stable it is. The 70-200 can be long enough that vibration may degrade the image. In a strong wind it will definately be an issue. Even when using a lens with a collar mount the long lens can shake in a strong breeze. I found taking the hood off the lens and lowering as much as possible (no skinny leg sections then) helps a lot.

I just purchased the 055cxpro4 instead, which has a much larger (16mm) lower leg diameter. I really don't like most of the Manfrotto heads and am going with a RRS BH40 with lever clamp. I REALLY love the lever clamp with camera L brackets. Best "accessory" out there.

The 498 baseplate is absolutely too large for a dSLR, the 488 baseplate is better suited.

The 190 should be considered by hikers concerned with weight, and willing to compromise in stability for that. The 055 is better suited as a general purpose tripod, particularly for photographers over 6' and who are unwilling to stoop a little.

Wilt, what do you mean by "baseplate"? Are you referring to the bottom of the ballhead that mates with the tripod or are you referring to the plate that mounts to the camera? If the latter, then the 498 can be had with the RC4 or the RC2. The 488 has been discontinued and replaced by the 498.

Leo, you are right...I was confusing the camera plate model and the head model, assuming (wrongly) that the 498 always came with the RC4. The RC2 is what is better for dSLRs, not the RC4.

Yes, I agree.

Well thankyou for the insight, I think I am going to go with the with the 055cxpro4, and I am thinking about 498rc2, i am not going to be lugging this thing around all the time, so I think that setup will work best for my needs.

Thankyou to all of you for the feedback!!!,
I normally do a lot of research, but am going to hawaii in approx 8 days for a funeral so time is of the essence and am ordering asap.
