Hi Folks

The local high school in my city had a fundraiser for one of their singing groups. They hosted an "Pop Idol" / "American Idol" style competition where anyone at the school can enter. They had 2 selections and 1 finals. 10 students were chosen for about 30 from the selections.

This is the first performance event I have photographed and it was a lot of work. C & C welcome!

Here are some of the photos, the rest can be found at my website http://www.williamliuphotography.com/f112057740

Forgive my awful watermarks... I am too lazy to turn on the computer with Photoshop so I did it in paint. Tired from trying to fix friend's computer.

1. Former Winner and a judge of this event (this is the third I think). Gave a performance in the second half.

2. Principle of the School (and judge) gave a performance with another judge (not shown) in the second half of the event.

Looks like you did a fairly good job given the limitations. Love the one of the principle!

Why couldn't you use flash? And what did you shoot with?

No flash during performances was allowed.

Some photos were taken with my nifty fifty, others were taken with EF-S 55-250 IS. Camera body was T1i (500D).

General settings were something like 1/50 sec shutter speed, 2.0-2.8 aperture on nifty fifty, obviously 4-5.6 aperture on 55-250 IS, Iso around 400-1600 depending on lighting (almost always at 1600 when using 55-250)

EDIT: I realized these photos have exif data so I guess I didn't need to explain.

Great poses/expressions in these! Shot #3 is probably my favourite.

Thanks for the EXIF data, always helps for those who are learning (me )

Ooh, bummer on the no-flash. I worked as a 'tog for my university photo services back in school and had to shoot a similar event, got to use flash though. :( I feel ya though, there were some awfully lit events here and there.

On the 50 f/1.8 shots (in particular) I would have gone with a higher ISO and a higher shutter speed. 1/50 is pretty marginal when you have moving subjects.

You should be able to get acceptable results up to ISO3200 if you need the shutter speed.

Ya, I figured that after the fact. This is pretty much the first time I have ever used high iso so I was a bit sacred to push the envelope.
