I wanted a head and shoulders image of my 4 year old son with a nice narrow depth of field and a muted feel to the colour palette.
I would have preferred the lighting to have been less flat, but when I finally cornered him there were windows left and right and light painted walls bouncing the light all around...so I took what I could get and added a little fill.
C&C always welcome and appreciated.

I think you did a great job here. I love the muted tones and light. His eyes are great too. The only thing that's kind of weird to me is the out of focus hair in the front but either way I think it's a great shot.

Thank you.
It was shot wide open at f/2 using a 100mm prime on my 5D...so DOF was very thin indeed. I enjoy the almost 'painterly' effect it's possible to get shooting this way.

It is a Stunning Image IMO it would benefit with Just a Tad more DOF say F 2.8

Thanks for commenting and the suggestion...next time I go for this type of shoot I'll shoot both ways and check which I prefer.

Great shot... You've got a perfect model there. I love the way the eyes stand out.

Cute... :) I'd try to get a little more light in the eyes if you can.. but your focus looks really awesome for the DOF being thin.....
Not a huge fan of the muted color, as it has a greenish underton on my screen... but we all have different visions, so .... that's just a personal nit.. ;)

Yes, I would have liked more light in his eyes too but sometimes its a choice of what you can get or nothing and this was one of those times :) I need to practice more with a hotshoe flash as I've been using studio strobes more recently - so these images give me a chance to evaluate and absorb C&C and improve.
I like the tone on the colour, it's personal taste as you say.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it.

His eyes are awesome! What did you do to get this tone and coloring? I like it alot.

Regarding the colouring, I've read in several places about using split toning to get these types of tones so I used that functionality within ACR and experimented until I achieved the look I wanted.
Here's another from that set of images.

The shot is quite good. The thing about it that freaks me is that his tongue is so obviously in focus. Maybe you could pull back on those speckled highlights from inside his mouth?

I guess I could, it hadn't really attracted my attention so I'd not seen it as a problem.
I'll try a version that way and see if it makes any difference or not.
Thanks for the suggestion.
