I have been shooting my 300D in RAW mode for some time now. Recently I took a series of shots that are showing at or near 10 meg in size (plus the thm). This is the first time I've noticed the file size getting up this large. I understand file size varies somewhat but is 10 meg unusual? And what might affect the size like colors, light, shutter speed? The shots were from the tripod, 1/4 - 1.0 second in length waterfalls at ISO 100 using the kit lens.

Not earth shattering but up until now I have backed up each Canon folder (100 pictures) to a separate CD and it fits nicely. This folder won't fit on one CD.

Mine seem to be around 7.8-8mb on a 300D! No idea what they should be.

This is a good question.........mine seem to be between 5-7 mb in size

RAW files are compressed using lossless compression. If there's a lot of detail or variation in the scene file sizes will be larger than usual. Don't worry about it.

I think the 300D embeds a JPEG within the RAW file (Like the 10D does)..

If it does, did you change the setting to RAW+Large Fine JPEG in the menu.. If you did, then you're embedding a larger JPEG and the overall file size will be larger.

And as tim says.. RAW images are compressed and the compression depends on the detail in the image.. More detail = less compression.

The 300D does include an M size jpg but there is no way I know to control its size. I just found it interesting that this group of photos managed file sizes 50% larger than the stated megapixels of the camera....I'm not the least bit worried about it, just curious.

I think one of the hacks can control the size of the embedded jpg.

"Woodsy" shots compress less than other less detailed shots, like a big green field with a large amount of clear blue sky, for example. I've had some waterfall and woodland scenes come out as large as 6-7 MB in large, fine JPG mode. RAW would do the same.

I used to have a 300D. When set to RAW+JPEG I did get pictures that where up to 8.5M. When I changed it to RAW only (I think I did this, maybe it was the 350D) it made most of the pictures at 5-6.8. So I figure the embedded JPG is 2-3M. Hope this helps.

They were woodsy shots for sure. Thanks for the info...very interesting stuff. The one file compressed in jpg is over 8 meg.
