I did a few searches on google and could not find the answer and I figure a lot of people here have multiple monitors so...
I can extend my desktop from my laptop to my LCD and I can position them do that the laptop is on the left. For some reason everytime I come back to the docking station the position reverts back to laptop on the right and I have to go back to display properties to fix it.
Any way to make the position choice permanent?

Update your graphics drivers. If that doesn't help, then the only other real option is to use windows 7. XP wasn't the best OS when it came to laptop presentation modes.

Have you tried to change the Primary Monitor?
1. On the Settings tab of the Display Properties dialog box, click the monitor icon that represents the monitor you want to designate as the primary monitor.
2. Click to select the Use this device as the primary monitor check box. Note that this check box is unavailable when you select the monitor icon that is currently set as your primary monitor.
If that doesn't fix your issue, then you may want to try Ultramon (http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/)

In short you cant. The computer does not remember the settings after they are changed. It only remembers what the last setting was. If it can not produce the last settings ( such as last boot was with 2. current boot is with one monitor ) it goes back to default. So every time you plug in the second monitor after a stand alone usage,it will be in Single mode. Possibly in Mirror mode. But never in Extend mode. And in the default position.

I was worried of that. Guess I'll have to live with it.

While his thing is true for XP, it's not true at all for video card drivers in XP. As long as you have Nvidia/ATI, then you can set it up through the driver.
